Experience Level? *SPOILERS

Playing game with out a walk through and avoid reading most threads because of spoilers, so I would like to ask a few questions about exp. levels.
Just entered a area called the Lower Ward. I have in my party Morte, Dak'kon. and Annah and TNO is a level 7 Fighter. I have kept him a fighter except for when I changed him to Thief and a Mage back in Ragpicker's Sq.
I changed him back to a Fighter right away after the thief training and from a Mage back to a fighter after I learned some spells from Dak'kon (up to the
6th circle) All of this was done while TNO was a level 6 fighter. And he got some kind of bonus when he became a level 7 fighter
My question is, have I missed a area or two somewhere that you gain experience levels faster or is this normal for this point in the game?
Not quite sure how this leveling thing works, should I have kept him as a Mage or a Thief longer? Would that have helped?
Or does that not make any difference?
It just seemed that level 7 is kind of low, since it seems like I've been playing for a long time. Not complaining having a great time, and I know I play slow so I try not to miss anything, just wanted to make sure I have not missed some major area
Thanks
Sonny
