The geck (spoiler)

So I have the GECK, go back to the village, find out that everybody is dead. 2 Questions: 1.What the hell do I with the geck now? Do I still need it? Please a yes or no on this question so you don't spoil it too much for me, even though I kinda ask you to spoil it.
2.Is the village doomed no matter what I do?

1. Not really. I'd just stuff it in the trunk of your car.
2. This is a scripted event, yes. And yes, it kinda sucks.
