Absinthe is a killer. Once I had been drinking beer and other "softdrinks" all night, and after having a couple of shots of absinthe (60% alcohol) I had a total blackout, pretty quickly i might add. I have no recollections what I've done after that but my friends found me, hours later, in front of my old home (where I had lived 5 years ago), just standing still... The following hangover was undescriptible

Absinthe was forbidden in most parts of the Europe for last century, since it contains a nerve poison (the name of the poison escapes me). Among others Vincent Van Gogh drank it, and absinthe is commonly considered the reason he sliced his ear off and eventually shot himself.

Handle with care... ;)

How to make a Caipirosca

Caipirosca is just a variation of the famous Caipirinha. Caipirinha tastes better but will be difficult to make outside of Brazil because I think it will be hard for you to find "pinga" (sugarcane ale), to mix instead of vodka.
And don´t add the lemon/lime juice. Put some slices with the sugar and the ice, then smash it all together.
It is great to drink it at a barbeque.

@Ysh you only have to be 16 to ride a motorbike, don't you? :D I wouldn't have a problem with being ID-ed (if it ever happened :p ), simply because I've worked in a shop and it's annoying when people make a fuss about it - most people over 18 can prove it, by my experience it's usually the under-18s who make big thing about it ;)
An automatic scooter yes :) and admittedly he was unable to tell the size of my bike by the bunch of keys I carried ;)

The chances are, though, someone comes in with full leathers and gear (not cheap) it might be a safe assumption that they are over 18....when my 17 year old brother first got his bike, it was all he could do to afford petrol after he had paid out for insurance etc...the gear he begged and borrowed :)

In the UK you have to be 17 to ride a clutch and gears bike, and even then you are limited to a 125cc until you are 19...

Yep, I know. I've had Caipirinha in Finland. It was made in cachacha (sugar cane liquor?). IMO Caipirosca tastes better, as Caipirinha had a bit similar taste as moonshine (BTW so does tequila), but that's purely a question of taste.

You are absolutely right in this one. I just couldn't explain it better... And thanks for the tip with barbeque :)

Correctamundo. They removed the poison part from it so it was made available again. But I do believe that in some countries absinthe was never banned, like in Portugal (correct if I'm wrong), and so I presume it would be possible to have the "original" absinthe from there...

cachacha (sugar cane liquor?)

cachaca = pinga = caninha
It´s sugarcane ale, around 45 g.l.
Besides barbeque, it´s also great with "feijoada" (a typical meal made of beans and various pork cuts)

Ok... there aren't any brazilian restaurants in Helsinki that I know of, but if I ever visit Brazil I make sure I'll have some feijoada. Thanks for the tip :)

Incorrectamundo :p The absinthe available today is complete with wormwood, the poisonous ingredient... And alcohol strength varies with the brand, I have seen (not drunk :D ) as high as 75%. It also seems to be getting cool in Hollywood - Moulin Rouge and From Hell both feature absinthe drinking... ;)

I see the absinthe topic has found its proper thread.

As for the cool factor, thankfully its not singing and dancing in the street. ;)

Hey, an absinthe-baileys c0cktail was suitable for the stupid snack thread (kind of...) :p

Maybe not, but you could be after a few shots of the stuff :D

Then I have been misinformed. No wonder it kicked in so hard...

That's just great. Plain stupid that is. IMO absinthe is horrible stuff and it shouldn't be made a popular drink as I'm sure only few can handle it. I know I couldn't.

You know, if alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and cannabis were totally unknown to man before and they were today introduced to us, I think first three would definately be banned by any siviliced societies, and maybe cannabis would be approved.

:D LOL I like that (mole)man ;) !

I could really live with that. - We would have to talk about the coffee though - I'm a computerholic after all. Without coffee I would wither away .... :D ...

No worries,

Well, it wasn't as much my personal preference but pure reality. Cannabis is much less hazardous than alcohol, much less addicting than nicotine or coffee. If cigarettes and alcohol weren't so big business, they would immediately be banned, belive me. And coffee, it is so widespread that it would be a disaster if it was taken away from population. Take Finland, for instance. We are all hooked to coffee in here (largest comsuption of coffee per capita in the world). If coffee was taken away, riots would follow.

I would have hard times too, I'm totally addicted to coffeine. If I don't get my "fix" till 10am I get awful headache by noon, and it takes a lot of coffee to wash it away.

I just found this on the 'net - It's strange, but compelling - and it fits this thread:

Here we go:

Drinks & Personalities....

Seven New York City bartenders were asked if they could nail a woman's
personality based on what she drinks. Though interviewed separately, they
concurred on almost all counts. The results:

Drink: Beer
Personality: Casual, low-maintenance; down to earth.
Your Approach: Challenge her to a game of pool.

Drink: Blender Drinks
Personality: Flaky, whiny, annoying; a pain in the buttocks.
Your Approach: Avoid her, unless you want to be her cabin boy.

Drink: Mixed Drinks
Personality: Older, more refined, high maintenance, has very picky taste;
knows exactly what she wants.
Your Approach: You won't have to approach her,> if she is interested, she'll
send YOU a drink.

Drink: Wine - (does not include White Zinfandel, see below)
Personality: Conservative and classy; sophisticated yet giggles.
Your Approach: Tell her you love to travel and spend quiet evenings with
friends.

Drink: White Zinfandel
Personality: Easy; thinks she is classy and sophisticated, actually has no
clue.
Your approach: Make her feel smarter than she is.... this should be an easy
target.

Drink: Shots
Personality: Likes to hang with frat-boy pals and looking to get totally
drunk...... and naked.
Your Approach: Easiest hit in the joint. You have been blessed this evening.
Nothing to do but wait. However, be careful not to make her mad!

Then there is the MALE addendum. The deal with guys is, as always, very
simple and clear cut:

Domestic Beer: He's poor and wants to get laid.

Imported Beer: He likes good beer and wants to get laid.

Wine: He's hoping that the wine thing will give him a sophisticated image to
help him get laid.

Whiskey: He doesn't give a hoot about anything but getting laid.

Tequila: He is thinking he has a chance with the toothless waitress.

White Zinfandel: He's gay.

No worries, even if I still don't know what a "White Zinfandel" is...
