Hmmmm.... it' been about five years since I read "Streams of Silver," but the image of Bruenor standing atop the burning back of Shimmergloom as they both descended down into Garumn's Gorge is one that has remained in my memory. Yes, I thought it was graphic and interesting, but it failed to move me emotionally in the same way as Gandalf's "death scene" in Moria. I thought Salvatore did a poor job in developing Bruenor's character in the "Icewind Dale." Not until the "Dark Elf" trilogy did Bruenor's personality start to break through the stereotypical "gruff dwarf warrior wielding battle-axe against orc-hordes" mould. But it took the death of Wulfgar to make it happen.

Actually, the only time I've been moved by by Bruenor was when he accidentally showed his affection for Regis while shopping for supplies at a store in Icewind Dals. As you may or may not know, "Hotaru," he lost his left eye in "Legacy of the Drow," and priests with healing spells, though they tried, could not guarantee a 100% recovery of his vision. Lo and behold, years later, Bruenor realized he was seeing from both eyes while berating Regis for his stupidity, whereupon he suddenly let down his guard and embraced the halfling in a bear hug while people looked in with delighted smiles. Noticing their expressions, Bruenor dropped Regis and resumed his perptual scowl.
THAT's the kind of development and/or character insights absent from Salvatore's earlier novels, but I am now glad he's beginning to demonstrate in his works.

Actually, I think that Tolken is one of the greatest writers around.
I haven't read any of the IWD stories. I have just recently started reading the Forgotten Realms books. Right now I'm reading The Floodgate "Counselors & Kings Book 2.

I read IWD trilogy a long arse time ago (when they first came out...like 88) and they are very good books...although i hated the DL saga so much i didn't rea any more D&D novels....
i would highly recomend (for the second time on this board) reading the Shannara series by Terry Brooks <----very very good fantasy,
how bout the old old Conan novels.....anyone read them??
btw....i wasn't so bummed on LotR (movie)...i read the book(s) first....and with all movies i keep my hopes low so that if its even halfway good i'm happy

I haven't read Legacy of the Drow yet. I've got two of the books, but not the first one. I'm currently reading Realms of Valor, a collection of short stories by different FR authors about different FR chars, including Drizzt and Elminster. On the back cover, it says there's another one like it that's a collection of stories about villians, including Entreri. I've got too many books to read!

My tickets are for 8:00pm. Its now only 11:20am.
Man, this day is taking forever. The film critic in the Chicago Tribune gave it 4 stars.

Best... movie... EVER! Okay, that's a slight exaggeration (inspired by the Comic book Store guy from the Simpsons
) but LotR rocks regardless. GO SEE IT!
