Here in Qld Aust we recently legalised brothels (to varying extents of outrage amongst certain members of the community)

Basically it was introduced for the safety and welfare of the sex workers involved and to "clean" the industry up and away from criminal elements.

Basically the before the inplementation the only people who benefited were the Managers/Pimp and the police (let's be truthful here, a few police are involved in the industry everywhere on earth, accepting kickbacks etc).
The workers themselves had no rights at work and were suseptible to abuse and mistreatment.
Note that there is still a "escort" industry running that atm doesn't have all the protection legal and otherwise that it might. And workers in that part of the industry are at higher risk than those working in a legal established venue (brothel).

Info of the legal body governing the industry here in Qld: Prostitution Licensing Authority
(Moderators, if direct linking is not allowed please advise and I'll remove it)

With regards to the topic, yes I'm in favour of having the sex industry legalised.
Mainly for the safety and welfare of the workers involved and to remove some of the criminal element. (obviously you're not going to make it sparkling clean but compared to a non-regulated industry it's a hell of a lot better).
Reducing the instances of "Street Workers" being easy prey for murders etc and having people being the victums of physical violence. Plus the industry revenue being taxed and less prone to having "side" industries (narcotics etc) being availible to government scrutiny. And the workers themselves gaining some amount of "say" in the industry (ie if they don't like the pay and conditions they can leave at anytime).

I'm not sure about the industry elsewhere and what if any effects of "slave girls" being in a legalised industry, but that surely must have some form of legal scrutiny on the origins & conditions etc of the workers involved. Unless major corruption is happening?
