Any quiz show that plays mind games on contestants. When my wife and I hit the fitness center a few months back I saw something called "The Weakest Link," in which the contestants actually chose to throw out those among themselves who performed the worst. The MC meanwhile put on an ice-persona and asked demeaning questions meant to make the idiots look even poorer. IMO, that stinks: if I want a dose of believing the worst about the human race, I'll go watch some Bush Administration spokesperson.

IMHO, it's not the fake ice-persona which is truly awful. I find it far worse the way contestants invariably explain their nominations for person to chuck by saying "Well, I had a had a terrible round, but I think <name if miscreant> did almost as bad as me" Ugh.
But even more traumatising than that, is the disgustingly staged wink that she gives at the end of the show. *shudders*

....thus giving the impression that she is smarter than all those on the show. The Australian version is hosted by an ex-soapie "star", which makes it all the more revolting.

Here in America, we get a second version with a comedian. He is actually quite funny at times, so no real complaints from me. The show isnt the best, so I tend not to watch it, but if Im really bored, and its on, then Id watch it. Youre right. I dont like the woman host from England, either.

no argument here. that horrendous wink she does at the end of each episode is buttock-clenchingly awful, and what's worse, the weakest link is right before the simpsons and you always catch the end of it *shudders*

LOL .....I feel sorry for you, man. At least you forget about the wink if its a good episode of the Simpsons. But I guess EVERYONE hates her wink, myself included.

Shortland Street. For those who haven't seen it (mostly anyone outside NZ) this show is a true nightmare. I'm not even going to insult acting by saying that this one is a bad attempt at it. They've taken every sad, cheesy pathetic soap opera story and made it even more sad, cheesy and pathetic. And what's worse is it gets funding from NZ On Air (basically government funding) because it's a home-grown series. IMO the only purpose to this program is to reduce the average intelligence of the general public for some dark government secret.

Reality shows. Big Brother, Temptation Island, all the 'become a pop star' rubbish. It's like producers have run out of good ideas.

yeah, i've seen bits, although i have to say i dimly remember seeing a Shortland Street photo-story type thingy in a magazine, and that came pretty damn close in terms of sheer horrendousnessity but it was a little more bearable because the acting was more lifelike.

They're bringing back some of the original characters. The "acting" is going to get even worse

What's really sad is how popular it seems to be. I wonder if it's becuase it's made here, or the common people of New Zealand are under some form of mind control? (which begs the question, is Weasel involved )

Weasel? involved with shortland street? Well, that would be diabolical and all, but surely even Weasel draws the line somewhere?

If people are just TOLD to like it, youd be surprised at how many people just flock to the tv set. You said there are action parts to the show? Well that probably creates a fan base all of its own. Acting is no longer the most important aspect in popular tv. Its what making tv get worse through time. Technology, cheap jokes, sex, and critics are what make people flock to the tv sets now. Im sure I could watch 10 different channels with popular tv shows, and 50-75% of the shows would have lowsy acting. Its the way things are working now, I think.

Here's a quick rundown on the story to Shrtland Street:

Private hospital,, poser doctors, brainless receptionists and nurses, everyone jumping into each others beds, no change in it's 8 year history. 'Nuff said.

Ahhh the mighty Shortland Street, what a truly crap show that is, the writers literally make it up as they go along, I get the feeling they use "medicine" to help their writing. Flibble's discription is right on point.

I would like to take this time to isue a formal apology to the poeples of the British Isles for having to suffer through such an horrendous piece of television programming. It is something I would not wish upon the worst of enemies.

I only hope the therapy goes quickly and smoothly.
