I cant believe you guys think the mage is the hardest to solo with. Try soloing with a druid and you will see what im talking about.

Druids are non good tanks. Your strategy is all wrong. Try this: Memorize the stone spell, doom (I'm not sure if this is on BG, but with Tutu it works). Have a sling and plenty of bullets. Tarnesh casts mirror image (multiple wizrds prevent him from getting damage). Flee.
Wait for three turns (i think thats enough. wait more if need be).
Now you have two options: disrupt his fear spell with your sling OR shoot him away when protected with potion of clarity. He casts magic missile. You're wacked once. Have a lucky roll and stay alive. Flee.
Have some healing potions (you only need one with your current dc). Get back.
Take the other magic missile. Flee.
Have some healing potions.
He must be spellless for now. Whack him down. He wont stand a chance.

And all that just to kill a simple mage.
It would be impossible to get by even Dunnalay (the guy in Nashkel mines) let alone get that far, and Dunnalay is piss.

Bwahaha! You guys are having trouble soloing a druid? That's the easiest one to solo with, as long as you have good stats! Tarnesh was simple! Entangle him before he talks to you, and throw daggers at him or use a sling against him, it's that simple! You have trouble fighting Hobgoblins? As I remember it there was numerous buffing spells the druid can use, along with things like flame blade and chant. This class actually taught me that those spells I never bother to memorize can be quite useful, if not powerful.
All that aside the beginning is the most challenging part. Once you start learning higher levels spells and get to shapeshift, most fights and encounters are simple, even Sarevok. By yourself mind you.
If you really do have trouble with a pure druid class, I recommend doing it with a Human dual classed from a fighter first. Do it as soon as you are able to, right from the second level. The benefits of wearing plate mail and being able to fight just a little bit better might help.

I agree with you on the first bit about how druids are hard to solo at the beggining. But it doest get any easeir when you hit the exp cap either. This is because druids are crap at meele and cant even wear plate armour. Also most of there spells are nothing compared to a wizard who can cast mirror image, fireball, magic missiles etc etc. This is why druids are and always have been the hardest to solo with even if you do get past the start.
