1) Calvin and Hobbes. Absolute genious. The best comics in the world.

2) Farside. Twisted. Hilarious. :D

3) Zits. I can relate to so many of them, its sad. ;)

4) Get fuzzy. Hilarious.

5) Dilbert. Great office satire.

6) Doonsberry. Political Satire. :D

Actually...I've never liked Garfield much myself ;)

I don't care for manga either, truthfully.... But that is related to the fairly personal experience of having watched Japanese salary men on crowded Tokyo trains play "pocket pool" while reading graphically, violent pornographic manga...... *shudders*

I don't think I saw those

I have a set (20 books) of a Manga from my ninth grade time in Japan. This will be spelled wrong: Hanna Yodi Dango. That's how my Japanese friends pronounce it. I think Hanna means flower. I look at the pictures and make up my OWN phrases for the dialogue. :D

It's about a girl who beats bullies up, she's my hero. :D

*smiles* Well they sound much more appealing than the variety I was exposed to. :) actually from what I understand there is a real cult around manga, and they range across many diverse subjects. It's just that unfortunately I encountered one of the nastier versions. Very irrational of course......but now I just can't get those images out of my mind whenever I think of manga.... :(

If you prefer some funny yet spoty anime you might want to check Slam Dunk :)
Isn't almost all anime based on manga?
The problem is that though you can find anime down here in Australia, the manga that they're based on is much harder to find, and invariably hideously expensive to boot when you do find any. :(
Ghost in the Shell, Akira and Neon Genesis Evangelion were all based on manga too.

Monika Hellström is my object of hate, or rather her cartoons. I have nothing against her personally of course...she used to hate me though, but that's another story.
Will we ever get to hear this story?

My favourite Far Side is the one with a flying saucer surrounded by cameras, politicians etc., with a row of steps leading to the ground. Sprawled at the bottom of the steps is an alien, looking dazed, and at the top of the steps is another annoyed-looking alien who's saying "Great, Zorg, how are we supposed to inspire fear and awe in them now?". :D

@Flibble-Go Footrot Flats!

I also like Groo the Wanderer, it's humour is slightly reminiscent of Calvin and Hobbes sometimes. And Zits is pretty good sometimes.

What's wrong with fat lazy cat with his hyper active licking dog friend ? :D :D

As for "violent pornographic manga" I believe it's called hentai; and I never like those too ;)

Hentai is just dodgy, I have to agree.

Hentai is for perverts and social losers. I despise it too, and how a lot of recent anime are trying to incorporate more seedier scenes into mainstream anime. I'm a huge fan of Calvin and Hobbes and Asterix's

There is a lot of confusion surrounding the various words that are banded around, i am in this group of confused people but this is how i understand it, Manga isn't the actual genre, they are a production house that have basically coined the phrase Manga and applied it to their style of anime, there are many different production houses in Japan, not just the Manga Corporation. Anime is a word used to describe japanese style cartoons...feel free to correct me if i am wrong :)

Your correct, its just that Manga hold a monopoly that would make even Microsoft drool with envy. Hence people like myself calling anime, manga

Manga, IIRC, refers to the Japanese comic books in the particular style. Manga is also, as Tam has said, the name of a company which holds a fierce monopoly on the anime market.
Anime is the animated equivalent of manga, often the animation styles and events in anime will differ from the manga from which it's based.
Aside from that there are various categories of anime/manga, hentai, bishounen, and bishouju(sp?) are the only ones I know of. Kid can probably tell you more than me.

So what are the other styles, ie an example of the difference between manga and anime?
