Thanks all. I had a speech prepared, but lost my concentration due to CE breathing down my neck ;)

Also, I am no relation to Weasel. If I am, he oews back child support.....hmmm.....that wouldn't be so bad :D

Sorry Sleep, you have me way over rated. Although it is nice to hear that it seems that way to you. Makes me feel like I am grating on your nerves. Makes my life seem more complete somehow :cool:

@Nippy, good to see you man. Congrats to you for bringing the gold back with you :D

@Nippy, by all means, steal the thunder....help me shove this whole 5K thing under the table :D

@Ysh...I will take that as a compliment :o And repay you by not subjecting you to the bad advice I gave AC about her system. ;)

@BS - LOL! :D unfortunately I think it is more than a software problem :( ;)

@A-c, I was hoping this pc would last me another year since it is only just over a year old now (well the important components anyway) *sigh*

@HLD - thank you ;)

My computer is way outdated, so I suppose I have an excuse...

But then I let BS mess it up so badly, and that didn't help, either. :rolleyes: :D :D

Your computer can never be new enough.

::thinks for a minute::

Maybe I should go home and get my power supply to "overheat" and burn itself out . . . then I could upgrade to that Athlon XP system I've been wanting to build . . .

Well, if you and AC need a volunteer, I could come over and help you two build a couple systems :D That way, when it breaks and they repairman asks you what the problem was, you can say it was me ;)

Unless you happens to be running NT, then I can actually be helpfull

Thanks for the link HLD :cool:

LMAO! :D Well I have already given my hubby the bad news. I told him a new mobo to support this system would cost about £100, but since I am looking to upgrade to something bigger in a year we could look to buying a mobo that can support a faster processor.

I then went on to privately peruse the computer mags and have found an Evesham:

Athlon XP 2200+
512mb DDR Ram
80gig Maxtor ultra fast HD
GE Force Ti4200 (will upgrade)
Creative Soundblaster Audigy (Cambridge Sound Works DT5300 speakers) Firewire socket
Samsung Syncmaster SM957 flat screen 19"
CDRW
DVD

A starter machine for only £1,174 :D ;)

Do you really need a new monitor, a CD-RW and a DVD-ROM? Why not keep your old monitor and swap out the CD burner and DVD drive for a DVD writer?

@HLD - this is an off the shelf system - I am not sure they build to order - though I will check for the future. I have a new CDRW, and am not that bothered about a DVD. My monitor is a fair one (Sony 17" TFT - Multiscan SFII) but it is a couple of years old now. I could live with it if pushed though ;) I just drooled at that system, though in reality I guess when I am given the go ahead to spend the money it will be superceded anyway.

If you've got relatively new components in your old machine, then there's no sense in buying a completely new off the shelf system and throwing your old parts away. If you do buy a new machine, you know you're going to rehabilitate your old computer and pass it along to your kid or your hubby, so you may as well suck up the $100 for a motherboard for your old computer, then sell the tires from your husband's car and buy a new computer for, uh, him, yeah, that's it . . . the new computer is for him (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more, say no more).

I have a generally low opinion of off-the-shelf computers and since you are capable of doing your own technical support, there's no reason why you can't build your own machine, especially since you could build a computer identical to the one you've posted a link for at about 2/3 the price.
