Happy Birthday fable old chap. I guess this means you were born in 1951, right? Hey, that makes you a child of the sixties, doesn't it? Let me see... you must have been 11 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, around 13 when Kennedy was assassinated, something like 20 when Hendrix performed at Woodstock, and 28 when I was born. Man! I wish my generation was as exciting as yours.

You could probably get more than some Dr. Pepper; I hear that they're paying $500 for a kidney in India.

Hmmm. He also had flares and D!ck [for heavens sake!] Van Dyke.
Our generation isn't so bad.
I was 3 during the winter of discontent.
I was too young to really know what New Romantics were in the 80's but I listened anyway.
Sting was fab.
The muppets were fab.
I was 15 during the Gulf War.
I lived through a recession.
I was 18 when "Cigarettes and Alcohol" became an anthem and Oasis were bad.
I was 25 when our world defining moment occured. I'll never forget where I was on September 11th.

I'll do without **** van Dyke, thank you.

As to my generation, they differed in really only one big way from what's come since. They held to the European idea that government could be made to work for people, and against corporate might. The Kennedy/Johnson years involved quite a few major political gaffs, but they also saw the first concerted American effort at low income housing, the establishment of a legal tier to help the indigent, the creation of a volunteer, government-run service to assist in developing nations (the Peace Corps), and the creation of Medicaire as a medical net for the aged. The employment programs during LBJ's years got more legit-aged Americans in jobs than any president since.
But hey, why create employment programs, when you can simply give everyone a check for a small amount of money and let the country slide deeper into debt! Dubbyah, you rule!

Happy Birthday Fable
Know here is the tired old cliche
Don't think about it as getting older just more mature, like a fine wine gets better with age.
Of course some wines get really bad with age, oh well where was I Oh yes Happy birthday Fable don't ever get any older than you are.

The problem for the Kennedy/Johnson administrations was that they tried to do too much. The Great Society was the culmination of the activist government envisioned by FDR in the 1930s where government not only worked for the people, but actively involved itself in their lives for their betterment. We can see the New Dealers fingerprints all over the Kennedy/Johnson years; hell, Johnson himself was one of the movers and shakers among the liberal Democrats.
Unfortunately, the Great Society tried to have its cake and eat it, too. We can trace the downfall of the activist government directly to Vietnam; if the Great Society had existed on its own, and Vietnam did not cast its shadow over Johnson's historical legacy, we would probably feel very differently about its effects.
Beginning with Ike, and continuing through Kennedy and Johnson, our involvement in Vietnam had disaster written all over it. Unfortunately for Johnson, we were in way too deep in 1963 and he couldn't feasibly pull out. Plus, he felt that it was his duty as the big American brother to bring enlightenment to our neighbours in southeast Asia.
Since he tried to fight the war in Vietnam and realise the New Dealers vision of American government at the same time, Johnson failed at both. Subsequently, we have a distrust of government resulting from being lied to about Vietnam, and we feel that given the chance, government will go back to its tax-and-spend ways (which is not necessarily true, but it makes for a good sound byte, especially if you're a Republican).
Happy Birthday anyway, fable!

The poor and needy, as opposed to the rich and needy.

Between 'em, both Bushes have done a bang-up job on removing that recourse to legal information and defenders for those who couldn't afford to find out about the law, or hire a good attorney. (Yeah, I know it isn't supposed to work that way, but...)

One of the advantages of being Queen.
Besides, I was busy trying to finish all of the homework assignments for this semester, all of which happen to be due today.
