fable wrote:“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

No, not Carl Rove, but Joseph Goebbels, the first modern master of media control. But the parallels to the contemporary US are both eerie and deadon accurate.
Yeah, at first I thought it was Hitler. He said something similar:

"The great masses of the people... will more easily fall victim to a big lie than to a small one."

Goebbels and Hitler collaborated on speeches alot, maybe explaining the comparison... Gotta keep the propaganda on the same page, you know. ;)

Solon? Nelson Mandela? Prince Gautama? George Washington? (Actually, Washington did it twice.) I am sure there are quite a few more, but those are the only ones who come readily to mind on a national or international scale. (It happens as well on a much more intimate level. Hell, I willingly gave up a vote on the board of directors that had oversight of my own position as general manager of a public radio station, because it seemed to me to contradict the integrity of my role. And I'm hardly a saint. ;) ) Each had the opportunity to hold onto or greatly increase their power, and refused, giving it away.

And finally, a very silly quote that got me laughing:
"I have passion, passion, my friend and I’m not afraid to cry. Who are you calling strange? I know you’re calling me strange, I know that but why? Who are you to judge? What are your values anyway? I’m extremely right wing, apart from 'in fashion' and I know how to cry. I tell you, I really thought 1984 was going to be the end of it all and you call me strange? Well, up yours man. I only do this because it pays well and I’m deeply insecure and you call me strange? They seem like normal enough motivation to me. Screw this I’m going hang gliding." -DJ Adam First of Wave 103 in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City soundtrack.

Speaking of food, there was this Julia Child special I saw... good lord, maybe 2 years ago... where the esteemed chef extraordinairre made a brazen comment about dieting. I really wish I remembered the exact quote, as I had actually not really known who Julia Child was up until that point, but the line immediately grabbed my respect.

If someone knows the quote, please post it; it'd be worth it, really, because it was kind of funny. Something about how Julia Child would rather eat one small bite of a steak than twenty rice paddies, or something to that effect...

the stand-up comedian Simon Munnery has just released a book of aphorisms, and I thought I might post some of my favourites:

What do you get the man who has everything? Might I suggest a gravesone enscribed with the words: so what?

Creatures such as you should be bound and gagged and thrown back into the sea so that you can evolve a little more or at least serve as a warning to any fish nurturing ambitions.

Cleanliness is next to godliness. And the chip shop is next to the hair dresser's. It doesn't persuade me to visit either.

All men are brothers. Hence war.

This one is actually from the old sitcom Cheers.

Sam: Hey, what's happening Norm?
Norm: It's a dog-eat-dog world, Sammy, and I'm wearing Milk-Bone underwear.
...Appeals to my cynical side :D
