@Mr Sleep:
So who's my opponent going to be? Is Georgi going to be incommunicado and hang on 9999 posts for a whole year or is she going to be back in a couple of weeks once she gets settled in?

Did we have a list of alternates? Maybe someone could talk to fable and see if he'd bite on this. Or how about I argue for the death penalty against myself? That way, I am guaranteed to advance to the next round.

I figure she wont have a connection much so probably wont be able to argue it with you.

Not at the moment we don't, perhaps your particular debate will wait until one of the others has finished (looks like CE vs CM atm) and then we chose one from that debate to face your arguments, how does that sound?

@Mr Sleep:
If we're going to have a next round, I would prefer to get a new topic and consider myself to have received a bye for this round instead of dragging this topic into two rounds. That way, my future opponent (CM or C Elegans) wouldn't have the advantage of having seen my central argument several days in advance.

That is up to you, if you wish to forgo this round then so be it, it would probably be easier to draft in a replacement though, maybe Dottie since Tom isn't back for a while anyway?

@CM: OK, that figure was for the US, all abortions are registered and collected. I'll post the required refs in the beginning of my next post.

Whether references are linked to like CM and HLD did, or posted later when asked for, is equal to me. Regarding the problem with a debate partner for HLD, the best would of course be if we could find a new one.

EDIT: I just noticed Kameleon is back, hey Kam if you see this, why don't you join us?

How about eliminating Ode to a Grasshopper vs. Tom on the easy availability of alchohol, giving Tom a bye until he gets back (this week or next?) and having Ode to a Grasshopper take Georgi's place against me?

EDIT: Or subbing Kameleon in for either Tom or Georgi would be fine, too.

Dottie is going against Frogus, who has already posted. Ode might be a good idea if we can't get a new partner to HLD, but remember Tom is only away until the end of this week.

I've come down with a pretty nasty bug just recently :( , so I may be out of it for a little while.
If you know of anyone who can replace me then please don't hesitate to offer them my place in the debate, I'm a bit slow-witted at the moment and won't be able to provide a good argument.
Sorry. :(

Tom could always move over to debate with HLD? :) I hope you feel better soon, take some chicken soup or something ;)

Tom is barred from using forms of the verb "to be" right?

Well you would have to be barred form using "not to be" as well ;)

Of course not. However, unlike Tom, I am not professionally-trained at the art and science of debate. My training is in research, not argument, so he holds a clear advantage over me, a lowly history major.

Not necessarily without solid facts one can not properly discuss a topic, i could say that a monkey in South East Lincoln caused the fire of London, one can argue for ages about anything but without any solid facts then the arguement seems unplausable.

But Tom is trained for that sort of thing. In the United States, history is taught as the mindless memorisation of names, dates and facts. There is little independent thought involved in any aspect of the American educational system, of which I am a beneficiary.

Are you not a student of life? Isn't that the important thing, Tom spends most of his time in Libraries and with other philosophers in "Coffee Houses", they don't get to experience other things like you or I, we should feel sorry for them.

Actually, I'm a mindless drone who works in a cubicle. They let me out of the office a couple of times per day to use the restroom and snack. After I leave work, I go home to slave around my house for my wife (and not in the good way). So as you can see, I am at a tremendous competitive disadvantage if I am matched against Tom, which is why he should be prohibited from using any forms of "to be".

Ode - I recommend chicken noodle cupasoups...but don't get the ones with those crap little papary discs of flour masquerading as noodles...

as for whether Tom should be allowed to use 'to be', I think no. However, I think that as all players are at least 4 years older than me, and therefore have at least one grade of education more than me, and a good deal more experience in the school of life, all players ought to be handicapped.
So here are my recommendations for the verbs not to be used by each player, based on their intelligence, experience, and other unfair advantages:

Tom: to be
CE: to prove
HLD: to imply, to infer, to deduce, to abduct
Dottie: to scorn, to loathe, to detest, to ridicule
CM: to use
Ode: to smoke, to toke, to stone, to cane, to roll, to inhale
Frogus: to perequitate

Are we all agreed?

I prefer canned tomato soup, myself. :)

There goes just about all my arguments... :D ;)
