Buy a flash drive. Copy files from HD (C:\ in most computers) to flash disk. Copy files from flash to safe location. et voila - and yes, I don't know how to do accents on GB...

What does a flash drive look like? Is it expensive? And what is a safe location?

The cost is dependent on the capacity...the lowest capacity ones these days are around 128MB...they double up exponentially in capacity from there. They just plug into a computer and show as another drive on the computer.

A safe location would be another computer, I presume.

You can pick up a 512Mb one up for about £40/£50. It plugs into a USB port, and like Rav says, it acts like an additional drive. A safe location would be another computer.

OR - you can burn your files to CD/DVD. I did that with my MW mod collection...

I realise these questions are stupid, but you have to start where the bozo is.

So how would that help? If it is another drive on the computer then you would lose stuff on it along with everything else, would you not (when the computer decides to steal things, I mean - my computer is a kleptomaniac)

Which brings me back to a safe location. What is that? And why do I need the flash drive thing (something else to go wrong)? Can you not put things in a safe location directly?

Edit. I can't afford another computer just to act as a back up, really. And I did try to burn stuff to cd's, but that just didn't work for me.

A [url="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?type=category&id=cat01049"]flash drive[/url] is a small USB harddrive. They range from 64MB to 4GB; you can get 256MB-512MB for about $20 so they are pretty cheap now.

Another way is to use a CD/DVD burner to copy the files to a disc. If you have a burner and the software, you can just copy the files to a CD/DVD and then copy them back from the CD/DVD when needed.

A safe place would be another computer, a second harddrive or a CD/DVD backup disc.

When you said that you tried but it didn't work, what did you do to try to backup your files before? If you can give us some details of what you were trying to do, what you physically did, what part of it didn't work, etc we can give you more advice about what might have been the problem. Or you could send a PM if you prefer to handle it that way.

Like I said I tried to burn stuff to cd before I put the machine back to factory settings the last time it went seriously awry. I spent ages doing it but when I tried to put the stuff back in there was either nothing on those discs or my computer disdained to talk to them. Either way all was lost

@ Greg. I do have g-mail. Can you give me step-by-step instructions for doing that?

All we mean by a safe location is somewhere that isn't on the same harddrive. If your primary harddrive goes bad, and you have your files in another location then they are safe.

It can be another harddrive on the same computer, a harddrive on another computer or a backup CD/DVD.

And the reason you want a flash drive is if you don't have a CD/DVD burner. You need to be able to copy the files from your harddrive to something, and you generally can't copy from one computer directly to another unless they are networked together, which just adds lots of complications. If you have a CD burner then you don't need a flash drive since you can copy to a CD instead of the flash drive.

But the nice thing about a flash drive is you can plug it into a USB plug on your computer, copy files to/from your computer, then unplug the flash drive and take it with you anywhere. It is a very convenient way of moving files back and forth from home to work, to/from a friend's house, etc. Email works fine for small files, but a flash drive makes it easy to move large files too.

@ Fiona: If you have a lot of data/files to back up, you could also look for an external Hard Drive. That's what I did. I got one of 300 Gigabytes for about € 200. Once you got a lot of data it becomes more economical (even if you have only say 20 or 30 Gb data, the HDD might still be more economical than the flash drive/USB stick, I only use them to transfer data). The advantage of an external harddrive is that you can work on it like on the hard drive of your computer.

You make an email, and attatch a file you wnat to backup. Then you send it to YOUR OWN EMAIL ADDRESS. That means you have it saved in your email inbox.

Yes and it's USB connected just like a flash drive, but with far more capacity.

Um....what size should I get? I do not know what the capacity thing represents. I think I do not use about 2/3 of the capacity I have on this, but I do not know what that is
