@Dottie, they obviously know how to do up a nice board, and create a fantasyworld background. But it still remains that NWN permits *no* pausing to review inventory, check stats, choose spells, etc. This sounds so much like Ultima VIII, that I have to wonder if they aren't taking NWN down the golden path towards action-games-in-an-RPG-cloak.

I still shudder at the memory of a beautiful-looking Ultima game in which monsters assaulted my character while he frantically looked through his satchel for the right spell scroll to cast. I just don't believe it's possible to control a party of three and reasonably handle weapon choices and spellcasting, too. Maybe NWN will prove me wrong, but...

@Brinky, Red Faction is incredibly short, so unless you are buying it for multiplayer purposes it might be worth waiting for it to drop in price :) Although the Geo-Mod is

Speaking of freeware, the free implementation of Civ is getting to be pretty good, runs under W2K (AFAIK) and can be found here. It's under GNU public license, so you can pretty much do what you want with it (source code is available). </STRONG>

Thanks, and er..no...*hadn't even thought of that* :) Oops :)

Robhin: Thank you anyway :)

Neverwinter Nights (no suprise there!)

Civ 3

A New Jedi Knight Game (not sure about when it will be released) - I think it was called 'Obi Wan' but news has seemed to disappear about it.

Freespace 3 (don't think this will happen, the story was rather unfinished in 2 and I want to know how it ends)

The, hopefully, most importent feature of NwN is the possibilty of makin modules yourself and having people play them, while DM/GM it.
This means that it gets closer to PnP roleplaying where you have a human control what should happen when and why.

The human element, so to speak, is introduced in a CPRG :)
I think that is what most people are excited (most) about in regards of this game.

Ah, I see. Thanks. :)

Incidentally, it looks like Wizardry 8 is being published by Sir-Tech itself. Sir-Tech has never adjusted to its loss of a major cut in the market when it dropped publishing/distribution for development, only, and they've been trying for a year to get Wizardry 8 published by somebody else at ridiculous contractual arrangements.

So now, in a fit of pique, they're publishing it, and dissing all the games magazines that reviewed their product for almost two decades. Nobody's getting free copy for review. As this is their last game, I suppose it's intended as a statement of sort. ;)

Still looking forward to it, though.

According to the folks at Sir-Tech, they're keeping ownership of the brand and titles, but will be getting out of business. Frankly, it's not been unexpected. They made some bad business decisions involving the US release of some terrible UK games a few years ago, and fell afoul of some slimy distributors. This forced 'em out of publishing, due to losses.

After that, they never could drop their expectations as developers to reasonable levels. They were unwilling to surrender the clout that publishers hold by virtue of direct lines to distribution, and they wanted too much of a cut from the take. The team became very bitter, and basically gave the finger to nearly everybody who had wished 'em well for more than a decade.

I hope that getting out of business means they'll pick up some sense of the realworld, and reenter game development with some reasonable understanding of the market. Though, frankly, I'm more pissed at their willingness to diss people like myself, who were their enthusiastic supporters since reviewing Wizardry III many, many years ago.

CIV III

I too have apprehension towards multi-player online games, and am not really interested in them (except story lines). Like fable, I am not a powergamer, and prefer taking my time to work things out. I don't play many games anyway, so I'll wait for Civ III, while playing PS:T (I bought it 10 days ago). :)

I just got the PC Gamer issue with "10 best games of 2002" - i was really glad to them PIMPING so hard for NWN, I also thought that No One Lives Forever 2 looked and sounded really, really good. The screenshot that killed me, though, was the one for dungeon siege - looks incredible.

I was really jazzed about what they said about the NWN editor: (misquoting from memory) "it makes it ridiculously easy to create dungeons in minutes" sounds good to me!
