ups your crit multiplier and threat range, drops up to 30% of concealment, safe poison use, ranged consistency
i love that class
True, but that class isn't core, and mostly this is a core comparison of bow versus sword.

Another neat corebuild would be the Archer-Cleric: not as powerful in Core-only as in "full" D&D, but still nice.

My two-weapon-fighting ranger for LG has the feat oversized twf and so weilds 2 (masterwork) cold iron longswords which, can be lethal. When the need arises he uses a swift action to activate the spell "Blades of Fire" and for that round both longswords do an additional 1d8 points of fire damage.
His bow... a +3 Dragonbone Composite (Mighty) shock longbow with disclocation (MiC). (Got the Dislocation access from the interactive at Conflict in the Vesve/Shield Lands.)
He also has a Hammersphere (AaEG) for those pesky DR problems. (Somewhat like Spiritual Weapon except that it deals 3d6 points of force damage and you need not concentrate to keep it going.) - Lasts 7 rounds.

Ok, is this balanced or unbalanced in your opinion? The point of the thread isn't showcasing, it's discussing whether ranged rules are balanced or not.

Just meant to point out that even with limitations on what can be applied (Due to limited gold), ranged can be just as good as melee. - The one problem is that unless you use a type of ammunition that has the descriptor for being both piercing and slashing, ranged (bows and crossbows) are only considered piercing.
As for a balance... that's pretty much dependent on the ehancement and combat style preference.

There's a slashing type of ammo, it's called Serpenttongue's Arrow, IIRC.
Preference (combat style) and enhancement do not mean anything to the inherent balance of a style. If you wanted to say that you can do some neat things with either style, depending on build, equipment and tactics, then I agree.
