Thanks for the advice. I'm going to do a RAM upgrade, and I'll check out the motherboard stuff with my "techie" when he's back in town in a couple of weeks. It's damned frustrating going through all these crashes.

Hmmm if u give me yer mobo brand and type i could search for u and post the link for RAM compability list. That is if yer "techie" still out of town

@Kid, to be honest, I don't even know where to look for that information. I have a few utilities that might help--X-Setup Pro, Norton Systemworks--but I can't find anything that's relevant.

Well big players mobo like MSI have their brand and mobo type printed on the board itself. *pockets check from MSI too like HLD

More problems have cropped up. For some reason, System Restore has stopped making automatic backups. It still shows as "monitoring" all partitions, but every backup point has vanished from the drive save for the ones I personally make. I'm not quite sure what's going on.

Have a look in the system services and make sure it's running and set to autostart.
As for finding out what motherboard you've got, go to
http://www.cpuid.com and download CPU-Z. the motherboard tab should tell you everything you need on which board you've got.

System Restore is unfortunately set to autostart. I rather wish it wasn't, because that would the diagnosis a lot easier.
Downloaded and installed CPU-Z. The motherboard manufacturer is identified as
http://www.abit.com.tw--does that make any sense? Chipset is VIA.

I wouldn't worry about finding out which motherboard you have with regards to this issue; it doesn't sound related to your root problem, but it's worth finding out for future reference.
I wouldn't worry about running System Restore; I'd skip ahead to a full repartition>reformat>reinstall. While you're at it, upgrade to XP Pro. When you do repartition, set an OS partition with a small portion of your HDD and set up a program partition for all your data and software.
