It's your game, of course but there is an extra 1/2 attack gained by fighter classes at lvl 13. I, personally, would wait just 1 more level.
Was thinking doing 5 in quarterstaff then cleric :D [/b]

With a little make up, you could go for the Darth Maul effect
 :D

I wonder why noone mentioned the most fun (alas, IMHO) class

Kensai/thief

Dual at lev 9 (250k), then you need about 3M to get your first special ability which will be "use all items".

You can also dual at 12, but then you will need another 750K.

with this special ability your thief can wear armor again (even with kensai kit), wield carsomyr, use wands, use scrolls, and backstab for an ungodly amount of damage (with kai).

An extra advantage is that you dont need another spot for a thief and tho Jan is a fine lad to have around, he isnt much of a fighter, nor a very powerful mage in ToB

I had this party when i completed ToB:

Me (female) - Kensai/thief
Korgan (dual wield some wicked axes)
Anomen (for cleric spells and romance story, Crom Faeyr)
Mazzy (2 handed sword or/and Halberd / short bow)
Edwin (duh)
Kelsey (for another romance story and new quests/lines - a good sorcerer)

Kensai/Thief

That's what my last play through was: (12)Kensai/Thief - very cool, but you still want Jan - Project Image + Spike Traps = "TEH WIN11111"

Party was Valygar / Jaheira / Edwin (Sorceror) / Jan / Solaufein - we still have to finish the Ascension fight, but otherwise we pretty much steamrollered everyone but Improved Abazigal & Eclipse.

I am playing through right now with a half-elf Kensai/Thief. It works out pretty nicely, if you don't mind using Shadow Keeper to hack in the kit.

If your gonna go fighter/cleric I would recommend choosing the beserker kit over the vanilla fighter. The beserker enrage is not to be underestimated it will save your ass time after time with the immunities. Very useful against Illithids, Liches, and Vampires. I would start with beserker dual at level nine use prof points in flails, hammers and dual weild. You then can arm yourself with Flail of Ages and Crom Faeyr.

Well Kensai are not my choice to dual with Clerics because one of the strengths of Clerics is you can wear any armor but Kensai negates this. Kensai are great with swords but again Clerics negates that. I prefer to dual Kensai with Mages since they both have armor penalty anyway. Just my opinion.

after cleric switch--->no armor??

oh so you can't wear armor even after you switch into cleric if you dual from kensai?

that clears up a lot i guess...hehe i was going for the 'crouching tiger, hidden dragon' pc with the fighter going on holy man but with a staff instead of a sword :D

but all thoughts aside, how would a kensai cleric do?

Well to be honest, Ive never tried this combo for the reasons Ive given above. But if you like it give it a try wont cost you anything but a little time and frustration.

Hmmm...

Kensai/Cleric = loads of offense, not much defense.

Kensai/Mages can wear robes, IIRC, and Kensai/Thief can wear all kinds of armour once they get UAI, but Kensai/Cleric would be pretty much SOL in both armour and shields unless you did some serious fiddling. However, with DUHM, Righteous Magic, Kai and Improved Haste you could really put a hurt out.

To be honest, I'd use SK to go multi, though, if I was going to do it - having fighter HLAs as well as quest spells would be very cool. On the whole, however, I think that Ranger/Cleric is the combo of choice if you want to do cleric dual or multi-class with a melee - access to both Druid and Cleric spells is pretty hard to beat

Re: Hmmm...

I dont agree Rangers are limited to 2 proficiencies per weapon, and the few druid spells they can cast doesnt compensate very well for this. But I guess if you SK this can be fixed.

Well, but...

Ranger/Clerics aren't restricted to low level druid spells, so they have the entire gamut of priest spells available to them - not just the clerical ones, but druidic wonder spells like bugs, stoneskins, Nature's Beauty, yadda yadda yadda [without] that nasty penalty of no access untill the priest side has 3 million XP.

It's true that they can't GM their proficiencies without SK (or one of the GM patches), and can only use slings for missile weapons, so make the Ranger/Cleric your melee generalist, since they can use a wide range of blunts. Of course, depending on the implementation of GM skill and your patch set, GM weapon skill may be quite beneficial to fairly useless.

Good gaming!

Oh that is cheesy, Rangers arent supposed to use any spell higher than third level. Does this work after you dual them to Clerics? Meaning are druid spells still gained with level up.

Yes, druid spells are included in the list of available priest spells for each level.

Whoa, you should check out Ironskins and Nature's Beauty. I bet not taking damage for the first ten hits and permanently blinding enemies in over half the screen with no save beats +1 to hit and damage any day.

Trying to clarify...

If dual classed, one can no longer progress in ones previous class, end-of-story - so no new spells, etc., except those for the current class.

Clerics can *never* use Druid spells (eg. Ironskin, friendly Elementals, gorgeous nymphs, etc.) Good thing too, an' all, IMO. Gotta keep the class balance...

Pls. correct me if I'm wrong...

B.

Correct, @Boris. Once you've dual-classed, your old class is closed to you *for advancement.*

Clerics can never use Druid spells, though some are common to both classes.

But a Ranger/Cleric can use druid spells, because a ranger gets druidic spells.

Yes. but the druid exclusive spells get incorporated with cleric spell progression so as your cleric gets high enough level the druid/cleric spells become available. This is obviously not supposed to happen.

Rangers dualled to Clerics stop advancing in the Ranger class, but in spite of that, as they advance in the Cleric class, they gain new Druid spells whenever they gain new Cleric spells (since Rangers are able to cast lower-level Druid spells). This is probably due to a bug or a limitation in the game engine, but it makes a Ranger dualled to a Cleric more powerful than you might imagine. I can see why some people think that's cheesy, but I have exploited it myself. :)

At the moment i have a god-like party

For multiplayer i have:
P.C- Sorcerror(Human)
Swashbuckler/mage (Human)
Tometic Druid- (Half Elf)

Archer (Elf)
Fighter/Cleric (Half Orc)

My best person is my Archer- he has that black dragon scale armour, composite bow +2, The equliser, Boots of speed , ring of Gaxx, ring of djini summoning, arrows +2, black spider figurine,

My second is my Blade with his great lore, offensive spin and his song. He's equipped with the short bow of geasen, dagger made by apprentices, Elven Chain mail,

Third is my Fighter/Cleric- He's got the Crom Feayer, Flail of ages +3 , full plate +1 , Helm of Bauladrin, Ring of holiness (Pick pocketed) Ring of the Ram,

My worst person is my Sorcerror, who is level 15

Well...

Cleric/Rangers getting the high level druid spells as well is probably a bug, though I'm not aware of anyone patching it. However, bug or no, it's a damn handy feature. Worrying about whether this violates (a) canonical D&D ruleset is fairly unproductive - lots of things don't work quite the same in BGII as in PnP, look at how the merits of spells can change so radically.

The limits on weapon specialisation can easily be overcome by any of the many weapon mastery tweaks out there, and is, in any case, hardly crippling compared to the spells, as Xyx pointed out.
