Thx. Didn't realise MM and FB could be targeted at non-monster objects. Been playing other RPGs and assumed to much..

In NwN I think MM can, despite it might not be supposed to. (Had a nasty surprise in a multiplayer game cause we wanted (2 level 1 wizards) to blow down a door and were used to doint it with MM from NwN, but didn't work.
Fireball you don't need to target the chest, there you can target an area, so placing it so the blast radius will hit several locked objects is a fast way to open. (of course it requieres to you have fireballs to spare, but with NwNs rest feature, it should rarely be a problem

)

@Xandax
The MM trick is really useful. Found Melf's Acid arrow works a charm too (damage accumulates and viola..). I misspoke with regard to FB. I realise that an area (not necessarily a monster) can be targeted. What I didn't know was that the blast would open containers/chests etc in the area. Kind of how it should be (although a certain amount of char damage should be considered). That's the way we used to AD&D it (much to the chagrin of the players - *No!, that flimsy robe of coolness surely is fire resistant....*)
...that is a pretty gross avator you have there BTW

Found out about the fireball by accident when I blew open several doors in the city when fighting mobs.
I don't use Melfs AA because I find them to slow if they don't break it on one of the first ticks.
Mostly MMs or Fireballs when I have them to spare.
@my avatar: thanks

But thats the beauty of Melfs. Fire one at the mage and hes powerless. Every time he tries to cast a spell, he takes damage (they usually try to cast every turn) and normaly it kills him when its done. And on chests, cast it on the first one and destroy the rest. the first is now open.

Melfs AA has serious value, no doubt. But as a chest buster it is to slow for me (unless it is what I have left

). Then I might as well, just stand and use Frost Ray or what it is called
But MM and Fireball are my 2 main opening spells .... oh, and knock on occasions of course

So I might have screwed up a quest. While I do not normally approve of cheating, I might need a little help. I know there is a spawn item cheat. Is there a spawn necessary NPC so the naffed up quest can be completed cheat?

In Ch2 the bounty hunter quest was going along great. Killed the filth, let the elf ranger chop off his ear. Then found Zor and in an attempt to play Chaotic decided to let him go to new pastures. Unfortunately, the game did not appreciate my CG approach (no increase in Chaos, AND Zor neglected to give me his ear). Obviously after he wandered off (forever presumably) the ear is not coming back. Don't feel like going back to an earlier game because I did a bunch before checking back to check in with Kendrack. There was no "Oh, I let him go" dialogue option so now I think the quest is ended. I think I needed the ear to enable the last bad guy to show up?!
Continuing the chest opening discussion - I have found MM to be less effective than MMM. Of late it takes 2 MM to open chests. Just a preference I guess.

I've not been able to find a solution.
There is a console command called dm_spawncreature, but this command will summon a creature into your party, as any other summoned creature.
So all I was able to do was to summon Zor into my party, but not as a enemy character, sorry.
(Zors tag is m2q1czor in case you wanted to know)
So, sorry, but I can't help you there.

Summon zore as a part of the party, and go somewhere where he gets killed.

Oooh. That's nasty, Ron. I like it.
Will try it and then I see no reason not to kill him myself. I am guessing I will have to lose my current NPC to make room for him?
Erh. How do you do the summon thing exactly? dm-{Zors ID tag}

Just type ##DebugMode 1 in the chat box. Then, type ##dm_spawncreature m2q1czor.

you can't kill him yourself when it is a summon, he will then be friendly and due to the PvP setting of the game, you can't attack him and spells wont hurt him
But maybe Rons way will work, although I'm not sure the game will recognize the kill as plot related when done this way ... but it is woth a try. (give us a tell when you have tried it, would be interesting to know acutally)
The command and tag is as Garret and I, myself, posted a few posts back.

Well, what do you know. It worked.
Did the summon, and in pops Zor. He says his usual first dialogue about you being a bounty hunter and barging into his room (even though I was outside!). As ya'll said I could not hurt him myself - even with a fireball targted near him. A chest took damage in the blast but not him. He would not follow or guard my PC. However, I went to the GreenGriffin Inn (I'd already done the basement) and went up to Zamantha's (sp?) room and triggered her attack. Ran away back to the stairs and there was Zor (he follows when you change areas). He was recognized as a party member and was attacked. Unfortunately, he kicked butt and the fight was over very soon. So, went to the graveyard outside of town (Arcane Brother's tomb). Went invisible so the zombies wouldn't attack me, entered the gravekeepers house (Zor follows), got the key and exited again. Now all the zombies are around the house and attack. Zor kicks butt again but at least gets wounded. Enter into graveyard and watch Zor take down all the zombies, but now he is badly hurt. Enter tomb, more fighting and then... all fighting stops as Zor does his don't kill me dialogue. I entered the I'm going to kill you reply and he ends the dialogue. I still can't attack him. Zombies won't attack either until I attack one of them. Went invisble again, zombies finally finish off Zor and VIOLA....his ear is in the remains.
Kinda long winded, but you did want to know. It proved really hard to get him killed by indirect means - the lack of guard or follow within a screen was a pain. Still, it satisfied my curiosity and Ron's idea did work.
I incidently passed on the Quest and have progressed past this and into Ch3 but wanted to use an old save to figure out if it could be done.
I also naffed up the five tomes Quest - I found them all but apparently did not click on them properly and several never got transfered into my pack. Bummer was Tome of Fire which got locked out of time
and the area could not be re-entered to recover the book. Live and learn. ....must click properly.....

Hmm - came to think of it ..... if all you needed was his ear .... why not spawn that item instead of all that trouble
But good that you could get it done ... personally I've never done that quest for some reason.... must have overlooked it
