But its out! YES! :D

The way the game handles NPC's in your party sounds very similar to Fallout. Given, it's more realistic, but it limits your ability to use strategy and tactics to your advantage. What about NPC magic-users? Just how much control do you have over what spells they cast at any particular time?

It seems Odon is one of the lucky ones. A lot of the people who purchased this game are up in arms because of the constant freezing/crashing bugs.

Hmmm, I haven't had any bugs or crashing or anything....of course my comp seems to run everything fine....? Yet others are up in arms about every game. It is puzzling. I am running it in 1600x1200 too :D

Fable it's weird to hear you asking about a game, usually you are ahead of the pack. The game seems well balanced to me so far. There is a 3step difficulty slider first of all, then there are henchmen you can get, for instance in the first little section they give you a fighter-type guy...I am playing a fighter so I did not really need his help, but a wizard or sorceror could have him as point man and hang back if the fighting was too tough. Also resting is a short little break, like a meditation break, not 8 hours of sleep (I believe they did this so the multiplayer would work and each character can choose to rest individually)....so a character dependent on spells could rest frequently to recharge them and heal.

Little story behind that. I was set to to do the review for a big game review site, when a copy sent to the site fell into the editor-in-chief's hands. He played it over the weekend without stop, and decided he wanted to review it, himself. This left me in an awkward position, with a PR rep excusing himself sincerely for having not gotten me a first burn copy at the same time. So I'll end up with a copy probably Friday.

On the other hand, I have a good shot at getting gold code soon on another RPG, whose release date has been pushed back a couple of months so as not to compete with the stuff out there. So I'll still have something good to write about--if not the latest cutting edge game around. :)

@Fable - to answer your question about locks - you can bash them - chests have hitpoints - and most of them can be bashed by hitting them a number of times until you have done enough damage where they literally break apart and you can get at what is inside - much more realistic IMHO.

Regarding crashes - played the game for 6 hours straight today with no problems whatsoever - the crash folks probably need new drivers, a decent video card and memory, or a full windows reload - or all of the above. ;)

My quick assessment - the game is stable, gorgeous, faithful to third edition rules - heck - its just what I was dreaming of! :D

All for now - I need to get back to my cleric/ranger for another 6 hour session.

Bioware kicks!

Okay, sorry I haven't responded to the questions (thanks to those who did this for me) -- three guesses as to what I've been doing? This game is great -- just completed my first real quest (a very class-specific one for my druid). If the rest of the quests are as interesting and creative as this one was, we're in for a treat.

I managed to fix that lag problem by fiddling with the video controls. A tip for anyone who experiences it: you can greatly reduce lag by zooming in close to the dialogue.

No crashes -- very stable. Hadn't heard people were having problems with it. One interesting thing -- I mistakenly hit the update button in the menu, and it went and downloaded a patch?!?!

Hope you guys get this soon so we can get the discussion going...looks like there's a lot to it.

Sounds a little like this little game I know of, set in an icy region of Faerun. Icewind something or other I think it's called... Image

Pretty much what I asked, above; it's worth getting an answer. I'm curious whether the game offers profession-specific and/or alignment-specific guilds.

I bought the game on impulse last night :) I knew I was going to get it, but I hadn't figured it out that the game was actually OUT yet...

I also bought the dungeon making manual, and have skimmed through it. Lots of code and looks confusing but might be fun, the art works seems to be by someone who is very talented!!

That's my only addition to this because I haven't had a chance to play/install it yet...maybe Friday or Saturday..

I haven't seen any guilds yet, but hey, I've done all of one quest. It was really cool, perfectly suited for my druid. Unfortunately I've been busy with work, so I haven't got the playing time I want. (I also started over my ranger character to play the druid instead -- glad I did.) However, it looks like any class in this game could be incredible. I just preferred the tactical options the druid gave beyond the pure hack and slash. By the way, persuasion looks as though it might be a very valuable skill.

Well, as I mentioned I bought it yesterday at the Mall of America. I'd just got my hair cut and happened to pass this little computer store and luckily they had a copy left! :)

But, yesterday was my sisters birthday party and tonight is going to be a play or musical at the Ordway...

So Friday.

I'm awfully sad I can't play it yet though...maybe if I get fired on purpose? ;)

Rudar,
Sure, but if you dont' live near me then I'm pretty sure you won't get it in time anyway :)

I believe so - I have a fighter/rogue, and the first quest I was given was perfect for a fighter (my first level was in fighter)....I think I found some other NPCs who would give a cleric or druid quest for a player of that class, but they won't give me the quest....the druid told me "the task I need performed requires someone more aware of the need for balance" or something. Probably if I had levels of ranger or druid he would like me more. Hard to say how it all plays out over the long haul, we'll see...
