Looks good, but I don't see anything about software. You might want to check on that as CD writing software could easily be as much again.

No, you can use any software with any CD-RW. There's a few to choose from eg. Nero, Easy CD Creator, CDRWIN. Nero is the best choice IMO.

So; I had an ancient external CD-R from HP - the software from that should work?

IIRC HP supplied Adaptec Easy CD Creator with their drives. If you've got a copy of that it should work with any CD-RW. The other software supplied by HP was a program called HP MyCD. I think this is written to work only with HP drives.
