Layout of Chengdu during the Three Kingdoms era.
I have a few more pics, but I don't want to rack up posts like that; makes me feel guilty after participating in Counting With Aegis!
Anyway to combine a few pics in 1 post? I am a duffer here!
Cheers.

It's called Destiny of an Emperor and there is a scond version called Destiny of an Emperor 2, both made by Capcom. The first came out in 1989 for the NES, the second one in 1991.
Both are not like the one's made by Koei, it is more like the Final Fantasy games. You play as Liu Bei only, and can have six or seven people in your party at one time. The goal reunite China with your 'sworn brothers'. The second one deals more with the 'hidden dragon'.
There is even another game based on RTK, (I can remember the name, but will look it up) and you play as Chao Chao only..IIRC.

I do wish KOEI would reenter the PC market with RTK and a few of their other popular games, again. Their problem at the time was that they treated the US market in the same way they did the Japanese: change a few features, keep the game otherwise identical, use the same visuals and engine, and release a new version. That resulted in declining sales, and they never used focus groups to figure out why.

Towards the end of their PC existence they tried to diversify, but used the same engine and graphics on European history (where it lost its exotic appeal, and looked silly next to good contemporary military historical computer games) and mythic lore. I really liked their last PC release, Balor of the Evil Eye, which used a Celtic mythos backdrop. That, and several of the earlier Japanese/Chinese games, are still in my collection.

Koei is one strange company.

They don't rush anything. Most of the games I have are made by them though, all of them console games. New Horizons was another good one they made.

The first one is in English and can be found on the internet. Now the second one...I could not find in English from Capcom, but if you get any version of 2 you can then get a ROM with a patch. Some people got together and translated it and did IMHO a very good job. The other one (With Chao Chao) is not avaible in English as well and the last I heard no one planned to translate it.
This is the only one I haven't played.

No ICQ here, only at home.
If you judge them against todays games, they will be real lame. But for their time period, they are some of the best Capcom put out.
I just went to
Ebay
and found Bandit Kings of Ancient and Destiny of an Emperor both up for sale.
Number 2 of Destiny will be the hardest to find.

I have it for the PC, and oddly enough picked up the books on that one, too. It's probably my favorite of the series.

Do you know where you can find old games like that for the PC? I look at Ebay, but almost all the games there are console games.

@Weasel : Chk your PM now
@fable : Bandit Kings of Ancient China aka 108 Heroes of Liang Shan Mountain, while the Novel title is "Water Margin" (it's a straight translation of its real chinese title). This also another of my favorite.......don't blame me

but in Asian countries it's easire to find chinese literature than English literature like Charles D!ckens

Sadly I don't own the novel, so I only read it once. Hence I'm kinda confused with the ending

As for the ending--I read elsewhere that the last volume of the four was added by a governmental bureaucrat, who wanted to contradict the rebellious, Robin Hood-like atmosphere of what went before. I guess it's something cultural that led all four to continue to be published as one, since I find the fourth volume a real letdown in the way it basically kills off the main characters and exalts the rulers.
Well, I would encourage you to search it on Amazon. They've got some fine collections there

Thanks, but I'll wait for now. At the moment I'm still revelling in a new, highly annotated translation of The Tale of Genji made by Royall Tyler, which my wife bought for my birthday last December. However, I'll keep an eye out in used bookstores, when I go to Boston for a weekend trip in May.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms would fall under this somewhat. It really depends on which version of the book you read. One was written in Shu and the other in Jin..(Wei). The Shu version was written after Shu fell to Jin and I believe is considered the most truthful version. The Wei book is called the "story" book. Meaning I guess most of it's not true.
And it's been ? 1700 years since this happened, and the winner and time does change history.

it is a confusing one indeed, Weasel. But AFAIK the most circulated & translated version is authored by Luo Guan Zong (I hope I pronounced the name correctly

)
