By doing it that way, it touches a part of the brain that picks up things like that. We don't consciously recognize it, or even realize it. The theory behind it is that the message will become embeddend in our minds, thus dictating, to an extent, or decisions in certain manners. For instance, there are many ads that will be advertising something like a car, or brand of ice cream. When examined closely, you can sometimes see the silhouette of a woman in the shadow, or the curves of the ice cream scoop. It's little things like this that constitute sublimibal messeging.

As far as I understand it, the basic idea behind subliminal messages is not sound, it really can not make someone do what someone does not want to do, somewhat similar to hypnosis, the suggestion really only, if that, reinforces the basic nature of the person being hypnotized.

Or perhaps I am wrong, if someone wishes to correct me, do so.

Well, that does hold merit, and makes sense. At the same time, though, it isn't making anybody do anything. What it is doing is implanting the idea of doing something on a subconscious level. When the idea is placed in there, we sometimes react to it without thinking.
