For people coming from overseas, especially countries in the Third World, the United States is still the land of opportunities. Everyone is entitled to compulsory education, everyone has a car and people don't sleep 8 people to a room.
Good description HLD, although I quote just part of your post. But what is the specific American thing in the American dream? The factors mentioned here would be similar or in some regards perhaps better, in many other rich, industrialised countries in the western world.

Sounds that way, although there are many factors.

Thankyou WK for heaving the bile before I had to.... ;)

The American Dream is a dream of bettering your circumstances and making something of yourself. Why should you have a right to do that when millions starve every day and you don't give a ****? Goddamnit because you are an American!

The American Dream is about being selfish and doing what you can to make your life better...which does not make it bad, but the fact that noone who prescribes to it ever has to dream of anyone else does make it bad.

*sings* 'This is not America, tra la la la la, this is not the miracle...'

@frogus: how does living my life, and bettering my circumstances make me morally wrong? I think you are going to have to back up that statement with some philosophical and/or ethical ammunition.

Frogus, that's a little harsh and please watch the swearing.
What makes it different for an American to want to better themselves than a German or an Englishman or anyone else? There are Americans who contribute to charity, try to promote various global causes and try to do good, as there are residents of every country.

ahh sorry T'L...that one slipped out
and I didn't say that all Americans are bad or that Americans don't contribute to charities or that trying to better your circumstances is wrong. I certainly won't back up statements I didn't make, and I think that we should all try and remember that I am not attacking you, or anyone else on here. I am attacking what I perceive as the American Dream, so if you want to argue then tell me either that the American Dream is not evil or tell me that it is something other than what I think it is...

I like the frog avatar. he's cute.

I've re-read your first statement, and I was going to agree, but now I realize I don't really know what you were saying. Try different wording.

ooh golly I'm sorry re-reading my posts I seem to have acted a bit angrily...have had stressful day full of a dear friend of mine who was understandably vexed about having an April Fools' Birthday..anyway I was just abit overcome with adolescence but will just leave this thread be...my gentle brushes with the mods are getting more frequent. ;) ...
I like the frog avatar. he's cute.
thankyou :) I was gonna kill him off, but after fond afection expressed by you, and some guy from SoA, I think he will stay a while longer ;)

Yes, puffins.

But don't worry about people getting offended by what you say, for god's sake people are too sensitive. Do like I do, say what you wish, as long as you have a point, and you are not intentionally trying to hurt someone.

LOL @WK - You can only get away with that with a post count as high as...yours used to be  as a relative newcomer, I've got to watch what I say lest I suffer The Wrath of Mods...anyway I think we ought to continue this puffin vs squirrel debate in secret. We will only write in black ink and nobody will ever suspect a thing...NWah Ha Ha...anyway, my opinion is that puffins are becoming too commercialised, 'selling out', if you will. I feel that the puffin's role in modern society cannot be advanced until they realise that puffinery is more of an art-form than a business...in fact, it's a way of life...

I couldn't agree with you more.
hmm, interesting points about the puffins. they have fallen from their status as sex symbols, and i have to say that i for one am not surprised. don't worry about the moderators, they are all exspammers. particularly T'- show her respect, but don't let her take advantage of you. she likes to be in CONTROL....if you know what i mean

Well yes I think the American Dream's lovely
WK I think posting black writing on a grey background may have given the game away somewhat...never mind, thanks to strategic placing I have retained the black background, so everyone else will just think you are posting random gibberish about puffins to yourself in the wrong colour. Anyway, what do yo think about the market shift, moving puffins out of the tax band of the average puffin user, and into more exclusive brackets? I believe that on the whole the shift in social attitudes towards puffins will have a detrimental effect on their standing in the stock market as a new 'consumer generation' rushes for the calls rather than puts and short sells instead of futures for the Puffin-related deconflabulatory decombobulator. Thoughts?

Long live AMERICA

I think what gave it away was not the black on grey, but the large empty spaces in the posts.........Regarding the Puffin Shift, I'm not realy sure how I feel about it. The pressures from new markets opening up in South America and Western Germany I think will have the effect of depressing Puffin Futures to the point of a stock sell-out of massive proportions- but I could go either way on Puffin sufferage and rights issues.

I never said you were attacking me, but I'm not sure the American Dream means selfishness towards other countries. I merely stated I thought your opinion was harsh.

Nice weather isn't it?Puffin Rights Issues are one of the few political issues that really gets me fired up these days. As an active member ofAmnesty International I have found myself campaigning on their behalf for several years, however, the situation is not improving. We can never really move forward to a new benevolent Puffin-friendly political era until compromises are made on both sides. For one I believe that puffins will never receive the respect they deserve until they give up that anachronistic propagandist political icon of the colourful face. However, Puffin emissaries claim that a colourful face is as essential to the Puffin community as say, a big fluffy tail is to the sqirrel minority. I believe this to be nothing more than posturing on the part of the Puffin Representatives, but puffin activists and puffin supremiscists seem to be buying it. And I need to go to bed in a minute.

I meant the 'you' in a general way..anyway, what do you think the American Dream is about, if not selfishness?I think the game is up WK. Weasel is on to us and I don't know what measures he is prepared to take. He must be silenced...but remember, no women, no children, no puffins...and we'd better pray that T'L is distracted by my hopelessly naive attempts at serious discussion of matters not of, nor portaining to puffoonery...
