I think this question is just like our personal experinece of art - we load things with symbolic meaning, we associate a certain thing to certain memories, experiences, etc. Thus the crap has an abstract, subjective value beyond practical function.

I am not a hoarder, on the contrary I throw away almost everything, including a pair of new shoes I just bought and bills I haven't paid yet  I have some things that have a symbolic meaning to me, like art and photos from some of my journeys, but that's about it. I don't save letters, worn out clothes, furniture I don't use or other books than the ones I still need for my job.
