Now Star Wars is like when yor brother got a girlfriend and never spoke to you again, just started smoking.

I think part of the deal here is that when George Lucas wrote the first SW trilogy, he consulted with Joseph Campbell and tried to make sure that it followed the traditional mythological stories of heroes. I think this is why it was so universally loved. The recent sequels don't have this careful attention to mythology and plot, and it shows.

I think its funny that Christopher Lee, who a year ago was just an old actor who played drakula, a James Bond villain and a few other things, is all of a sudden transformed into an acomplished actor, who is the bad guy in 4 of the most anticipated movies in the coming years! (LoTR and Star Wars)
I am not 100% sure he is the bad guy in Star wars, but I think if he has an alter ego, a Darth before his name, and his name is Tyranus- its pretty obvious. In imdb he is credited as Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus .

Spiderman looked cool from the trailers. Shame about the original trailer though...

In TPM, George seem obsessed with eye candy and merchandising. He forgot that the marketing bonanza that SW: ANH created was entirely by accident. People loved his movie so much they bought everything with the Star Wars logo on it, not the other way around.

When Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn and the Dark Empire comic book series came out in the early 1990s, it rejuvenated a dormant franchise and paved the way for the original trilogy re-releases. TPM almost single-handedly killed everything the Expanded Universe built.

As I was watching the movie, I saw very little substance and was picturing in my mind which parts were going to become video games (the pod race, the space battle, the Battle for Naboo, etc.). It was as if George forgot everything that made Star Wars so great and why its legion of fans are the second most loyal and fanatical in the galaxy (Trekkies being the first).

I hope that George learned and has infused AOTC and E3 with far more substance than TPM had. The New Jedi Order and some of the other Expanded Universe products are amazing, but if the movies suck any worse, Star Wars is going to lose an entire generation of fans.

Well, anything is better then something that sounds like some B-rated horror flick.

From what I've seen on Fox last Sunday, Episode II looks amazing and way better than the first episode, from a technical and graphical perspective. I know that may prove to be the bane of the movie, but considering the special FX in Ep. 1(which, IMO, are kind of cheap), I think I can at least expect some really good eye-candy. I'll just walk into the theater expecting nothing more than a piece of eye-candy with a plot slapped on to it.

A. I meant creepy person, actor and otherwise. I simply don't like movies with him. He ruined Platoon for me, same with clear an present danger (although that wasn't great in the first place), and same when he played the vampire last year (can't remember the name).

B. Why do you have to patronize me, even though I am in agreement with you!

C. Sorry I was so simplistic, but come on, before I knew he was in LoTR, he was Dracula- irelevent of anything else he did, he will always be Dracule- but when you reach two (one already, and the second-Obviously bound to be) extriemely succesful series, that changes your (or atleast my) perspective.
So now he is Dracula, Saruman and possibly Darth Tyranus!

I thought Spiderman looked corny and uninventive.
Scooby Doo looks much more impressive.
BTW the riginal trailers weren't amazing either- they were better than the current ones, but still.

Despite the name, Episode 2 looks much better than 1.
Anakin dual wielding, Ian Mcdiarmid has a much bigger part as Darth sidious/ Supreme Chansler Palpatine- I think he looked very good in the trailers, again, Christopher Lee, The story seems better, certainly the actor playing Anakin is better and they have Boba Fet kind of character- who can't go wrong.

He does? Obviously by the time he became Darth Vader, he decided single wielding was a better option Kind of like the mysterious dying-out of the double-ended lightsabre

I don't like the look of Hayden Christiansen, although admittedly he'll be better by virtue of not being Jake Lloyd... he doesn't really look much like him though.

What about White Sands, or American Psycho. The latter he might not be a star in, but it is a very good film. White sands is one of my favourite movies from the eighties, really good IMO

It is the unfortunate problem of being memorable in roles, look at Michael Rooker (Henry Portrait of a serial killer) it took him about 10 years to get away from the movie and ever now he still plays characters who are a little psychotic. There is little that can be done about this, i guess it is up to actors to chose diverse roles, but with some actors (like Lee) they are just intimidating by trait and can't avoid that.

Side note: doesn't Darth Tyanus, sound a bit riduculous, it's like calling him "Darth evil bad guy", it sounds like some kind of camp theatrical name to me, i will keep expecting someoen to shout "Oh no he isn't" all the way through the movie

Was there the much substance in the first movie? It seems that most people forget that Star Wars is not that great a cinematic movie, it is not exactly Citizen Cain. What it does well is make use of special effects, it is basically a common story of good versus evil.

Reminds me of what Roger Ebert once wrote about Star Wars: "To see Star Wars again after 20 years is to revisit a place in the mind. George Lucas' space epic has colonized our imaginations, and it is hard to stand back and see it simply as a motion picture, because it has so completely become part of our memories. It's as goofy as a children's tale, as shallow as an old Saturday afternoon serial, as corny as Kansas in August... and a masterpiece." Star Wars is a great movie. Despite all its failings, it's more than the sum of its parts.

I agree with your point, there is a certain nostalgia surrounding the film, but is that enough?
