Environmental smoke has been scientifically determined to contribute to a host of diseases in people who don't smoke, themselves. This helps to explain why many US businesses have declared themselves tobacco-free zones--one of the very few environmentally friendly actions that seems to be actually winning national support over here.

Oddly enough, there was little sign of it in Central Europe, when we went to Hungary this fall. Old people didn't smoke, but otherwise, most of the two cities we stayed in for three weeks (Budapest, and Kecskemet) were smokers' paradises. Chain smoking was common. I can guess that the inability to afford cigarettes before the 90's has affected the Hungarian mentality like a person who's starved for years, and now can eat all the food he or she wants. They go crazy.

We did find a few smoke-free restaurants in Budapest, but that was largely because of the Anglo-American clientele, who are beginning to realize that the city's a great place to visit. The Czechs, Slovaks and Poles are said to have the worst smoking habits of all--even the Hungarians laugh at them. And oddly enough, those three nations also have large geographical areas that are considered off-limits to travelers, because of the exceptionally high pollutants in the environment (thanks largely to badly arranged mining and refining). Coincidence?

I have two parents like that :(

It's really unnecessary that WE should have to get sick because THEY have to smoke!

It's all about blame.

I grew up in a household with two smoking parents. I didn't get sick very much. Then I moved out (as we all do) and started smoking almost immediately upon entering college (never smoked before that, another story). Still, though, I've not really had to deal with a lot of illness since leaving my parents home. No, I'm not a health nut but try to take vitimans and eat fairly well. It would seem I've just a strong constitution and am filled with phagocytes that patrol my body voraciously and pounce germ-would-be-illness with tenacity.

Anyway, that said, I just don't think you can blame two smoking parents for being sick. For bronchitis, I'd recommend a couple of lucky strikes a day and a boodles gimlet with filberts. Gin, good gin, definitely does the body good.

Well I am blaming them, because I just happen to be allergic to the stuff obviously.

Well, I'm allergic, and they have to choose to smoke around me don't they... for the while they quit smoking I never got sick, now that they started again, I got it four times in five months. I don't think that is coincidence--since I always kept getting it before they quit.

Too bad I'm underaged but thanks anyway :)

Edit: Let me add that they just started smoking again in August last year... about 6 months ago... :(

Reasearchers at the Diamond Headace clinic in Chicago have reported n the Jounal Current Pain and Headache Reports - October 2001 that tea and coffee can relieve bad headaches faster than conventional pain-killers.

Actually, he can blame his parents for it in this case. There is such a thing as Chronic Bronchitis and it is caused by cigarette smoking.

well, reading this catalog of bronchial issues makes me glad that: my parents never smoked, and I do not often get sick

oh yeah, except for my chronic backaches and stomach trouble. Unfortunately if it's not one thing its another :(

*reads the link*

I can't wait to move out of this hellhole. The last thing I want is to have that permanently. I brought up the issue with my mother and she obviously doesn't give a crap. I told her "Well my friend looked into it and she showed me that it can be caused from cigarette smoke" and she just said "Well guess what I looked into it and it's viral." and she didn't look into it... Oh God I can't wait to graduate...
