Okay, I've done some more experiments trying to figure out the problem.
I tried installing IWD2 on a friend's lap top (just because it was another system that happened to be available) and it worked. No prompt appeared about any uninstall file missing.
I did check my D drive for errors, or tried to rather. I right-clicked on the D drive and looked through the properties, but saw no option like with the C drive to actually do a scan for errors and repair them if possible. There were 3 'devices' I suppose (such as the floppy disk drive) shown and each one was said to be working properly.
So, I guess the files weren't erased off the disk and I have no new guesses as to what the problem could be.
