If you say so Pope.

In any event the moderators are getting tired of flaming (Flagg recently deleted an entire topic on SYM due to the inappropriate posts of some members) so let's try to tone back (or at least make the ribbing a little more good-natured

)

Hello guys!!!!
Try to ignore other people posting war messages on this topic.
What do you think of the spells i've said best for a mage/thief???
Now that we're beginning to grow, the discussion may become interesting.....

I owed no alegiance to the Shadow Guild. I have always been free. I made my intent clear, and that was to scourge Faerun of the plague of magic, the great Corrupting Power, and those who wield it. The Shadow Guild has merged with the cursed Counsil of Mages. Thus, old friends have now become enemies.
The Leage of Divinity will win. Not because they are stronger, but because they are right. Their power is granted. They gain their power through constant devotion to their ideology, rigorous training in body, mind, and soul.
Mages forsake their souls. They concentrate only on their mind. Mages need no ideology or morals. The power of mages is stolen, not granted. They find what power and knowledge they can, and they take it, never stopping to ask why or even if they should. Their arrogance and reliance on an unnatural and tainted power will be their downfall.
I respect the League for their god-granted power, though I promise no alegiance. We have a common enemy.
The Shadow Mages now fight on two fronts. One visible and glorious, the other unseen and deadly efficient.
Thieves, be warned. Leave now, before you are drawn in to the Corrupting Power like a bright-eyed initiate to a mimic's trap. Escape while you have your humanity.
If you cross me, I will let you know, and you can explain your decision to your god!
Damn Rail, I would have thought a fellow Alaskan would know how to keep cool

) Clerics - Noble Holy Men or Conning Televangelists? I leave each man to his own interpretation. Now personally I'm strong proponent of faith, but it's ludicrous to think the secular faction of the world has no power and can never triumph. And personally I think cooperation between sects is better than rampant tribalism. And it’s not as if thieves are these total weaklings that some League members have suggested. Anybody here ever heard of a little known assassin by the name of
Artemis Enteri, Drizzt’s nemesis and equal in combat? As artist Matt Wilson puts it:
“Artemis is the guy you don't want to run into in a dark alley. He's also the guy you don't want coming through your window in the middle of the night, like he's doing here. Whatever he's up to, you know it has to be unscrupulous." If Drizzt can respect the abilities of an assassin, why can’t the League?
Speaking of which, I think the assassin is the by far the best thief kit. Not that I malign the others, I just think the assassin is the best. What do you guys think? (smooth sequeway to keep this post on topic , eh?

Here’s the picture alluded to in my last post. How about we make Artemis our official patron?

I think you're right. No one can andle every situation alone. But it's not this the point: even if you're incredibly powerful, i think there's always something to learn from other "sects". Mages and thieves can put up a great alliance.....

I think so. I don't like swashbuckler because he misses one the main thief attribute: backstabb.
About bounty hunter, i think they're powerful, but for my style of play, i think that the poison ability and incredibly high backstabb of an assassin are invaluable.

Check out this except from The Complete Book of Elves (AD&D 2nd edition). I think it can apply to mages and thieves as well

:
Although elves and dwarves both fight on the side of goodness, they often find themselves at odds over everything else. The main point of contention between the two is the definition of a good life. Dwarves strongly believe in the work ethic (elves do not). Dwarves don't feel that happiness is essential to a good life (elves certainly do). Dwarves believe life should be organized and well cared for - not haphazard and spontaneous as elves prefer. These views, so contrary to the elven enjoyment of life, don't allow dwarves to see things on the elven level.
Yet each race secretly appreciates the other, and some of the strongest bonds in the world are between elves and dwarves. The two races are actually a good complement to each other.
Eat your heart out Drakron Du´Dark. You're not the only one who can post obscure D&D information!

As long as we have a member like Kayless as defender, with all his knowledge and good taste for pictures

(really nice the artemis one, but also the elminster on the council topic) we are sure no one can even think to defeat us.

What's Aw????
Anyway: have you read "Melmoth, the wonderer" by C.R.Maturin???
If not i think you'll like it. It's not an easy book to get (here in italy), and not an easy book to read but it's the best i've ever read.

Aw is just what it sounds like. Perhaps if I added an extra couple of W it would look better. Awww

It's just a sound people make when they're flattered or at a loss for words (pretty rare for me to be at a loss for words

)
Never read Melmoth, so I'll have to check it out.

It can't be any harder than Milton's Paradise Lost though. That book nearly killed me

You've choosen a good book: the paradise lost.

Great book...
Anyway Melmoth has a solid plot with a really good insight on Inquisition (Inquisizione in italian, don't know exactly in english), monks' life in the past, and religion.....the writer was a monk himself, but he decided to abandon the church. So his descriptions are really interesting.
It's one of the masterpiece of Ghotic literature (The Masterpiece IMO)

Sir Thomas Mallory's 'Le Morte D'Arthur' was written in the 15th century and is also a bit wearying to go through. He puts too much detail on what each Knight's heraldric symbol was and who did exactly what in jousts down to the minute details. Of course such things can't detract from a classic's value, no matter how many migraines it produces.

I warn you, Kayless. Leave now, before you too are put to the knife to free your ensorcelled soul. These mages only lure you to act as a human shield so they can study in peace in hopes of gaining yet more power. You have made peace with those unworthy of it.
Stick with what you know: cunning, brawn, steel, and shadow. These are what make the assassin deadly. Not alliances and the All-Consuming Art.
Avoid my wrath and those I fight with while the choice is still your own!
Okay, stepping out of character, I am surprised it has yet to be mentioned, but some of the best spells for a mage/thief are Black Blade of Disaster followed by Tenser's Transformation. I have read it in other posts and tested it out myself. Makes for great backstabs and stunning toe-to-toe fighting after, if needed.
Also, does Chill Touch, and other touch spells like it get multiplied when backstabbing? The effects do work through weapons, so I wouldn't be surprised.
