Wise choice. I just had my 9800Pro delivered today, which I am now tweaking for Oblivion. You had to burst my bubble ;)

Well, if I got the wrong version, being someone who admits to much ignorance on this (and sundry other areas), I can always send it back, and upgrade to another card--now that I've sold my wife on spending the 170USD. I always check in any case ahead of time for the return policy of the place I buy something from, just in case there's reason to return it.

Ah don't worry about it. Didn't tweak a thing and it's great. :D
And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

I'm told, btw, that there are major differences in speed between the AGP and PCI versions of cards. Is this true? Anybody have personal experience to draw on?

There are differences between AGP and PCI. There isn't much difference between AGP and PCI-Express.

The PCI-Express is 64-bit, but the motherboard slots are 32-bit, that I've got. So AGP would seem to be the way to go.

Obviously, since the 9600 series were only ever released for AGP.

Not obviously, since I've got a custom-made computer, and the person who built it is a good friend. :D

And RookieRookie, it might help if you drop the superior attitude.
