Oscar Nominations

Both are correct, the acadamy members could choose who to vote since December, but the dead line is only a few days away.

As for Russell Crowe not getting an oscar because of his tempremental attitude. That would be really dissapointing as the award is suppose to be awarded to the best actor. Politics should take a back seat.

Anyway wouldn't you be upset if the director cut out half of your acceptance speech?

What's with all the actors doing interviews etc on their "Oscar campaigns", and trade adverts for movies, if the awards were decided back in December?

And as I said, I'm not feeling particularly well-disposed towards Spielberg at the moment... Ok, he's made some good movies. Couldn't you idolise someone who makes consistently good movies rather than special effects driven rubbish?

@Nael True that the Academy loves disabilities, but Russell Crowe plays that too. I think the Oscar is his, despite his performance at the BAFTAs

Of course, there are other things to consider... If PC-ness wins out, the Oscar could go to Will Smith for Ali. A black actor has never won Best Actor, and there are two nominated this year. But my money's on Crowe.

@Tamerlane But the Oscars are all about politics. Sad but true. The Best Picture Oscar isn't going to go to the year's best movie, because it hasn't even been nominated.

Senor Speilbergo

Personally i can't remember a spielberg film that i would class as particularly brilliant. I was watching THX 1138 the other night, and i have to say it was pretentous nonesense, i got so bored i just switched it off.

Morlock can you remind me of any of his better films, i am at a loss. Oh and ET doesn't count

@Georgi, what exactly did Crowe do at the BAFTA's, i heard soem rumours but i am not sure. BTW how are you today?

I think most people would class Schindler's List as one of his best. (I have had on video for ages, still not got around to watching it.

) Along with the first 20 minutes or so or Saving Private Ryan. And then there's ET...

The guy in charge cut Crowe's speech (he was reading a poem or something) cos he thought it was going on too long, and Crowe was a bit annoyed and roughed him up a bit, if I've understood correctly. Or because it was edited out of the TV coverage, maybe.

Schindlers list is definately his best film, Saving Private Ryan turn into some kind of horrible "America is wonderful" film after the first half hour, as for ET...

Roughing up however sounds a lot like his kind of thing

Russell Crowe's Apology To TV Exec Over BAFTAs Bust-up

Superstar actor Russell Crowe has apologized for pinning a television executive against a wall after last week's BAFTAs. In an astonishing phone call to British Broadcasting Corporation man Malcolm Gerrie, 51, Crowe said he was sorry for his behavior at last Sunday's event and promised to buy Gerrie a drink when he was next in London. He then spoke to Gerrie's 12-year-old son Oliver for 15 minutes, letting him in on the secrets behind the making of Roman epic Gladiator. At the BAFTAs - Britain's equivalent of the Oscars - Crowe was left ranting and raving after Gerrie was forced to cut short the broadcast of his acceptance speech for his Best Actor award. He pinned Gerrie against a wall and cursed at him, then refused to back down when asked about his behavior later in the week. But in the phone call on Saturday morning, Crowe told Gerrie, "I'm ringing to say I'm so sorry about what happened. My language was excessive because I was livid but I behaved inappropriately. I was over-reacting because I felt passionately about it at the time. I understand your family have been doorstepped by Australian television and I would like to know if there is anything I can do or say to make it up to them." Gerrie adds, "I told him I didn't get any satisfaction from the whole situation and if he wanted to make it up to any of the family he could speak to my son Oliver."

@Morlock (and others who were discussing it) I just checked the Academy website, final ballots have to be returned by 5pm on Tuesday 19th March.

I disagree, his best performance is in The Insider. Where he doesn't

But then all his films I've seen, his performances have been very strong.

And no, I haven't heard his song... what song? Have you?

Well i agree the insider is very good, erm, you might have changed my mind actually, i don't have my thinking cap on today, and i had forgotten about that.

I saw it on the TV the other day, he has released a song with his band, it is some folky nonesense, very Eurovision

Really? Strange, when he was on Parky he was talking about how his band is just for fun, and he wouldn't want his music to be sold commercially and stuff.

It is possible that it isn't commercial, they have a video and everything though, it is confusing though, why would it be on if they were not going to sell it?

Well it is a Folk Eurovision fusion, called Fokovision

It isn't well known by most people, it is purely underground at the moment

Seriously though it is just your standard Guitar + man + Drums. Nothing spectacular.

You guys are talking about his rock band, 30 odd foot grunt or whatever it's called. Heard that they are not so flash, but with 90% of their fans being women you would think that his star status would of helped. And no I can't imagine Russel Crowe doing a poppy eurovision song.

I'll still be protesting if he loses because of what occured at the BAFTA's.

As for the discussion on Steven Speilberg, he started the whole Jurrasic Park franchise I think. But then the other amatuerish director destroyed JP2. He has spent a considerable time doing a documentary on the Holocaust also, and I would live to see that.

I would rate him as one of my favourite directors.

Yeah, 30 odd foot of grunt... I imagine that if they sell any records it will be on the basis of his celebrity rather than his talent

But if he loses the Oscar, how will you know if it's because of what happened at the BAFTAs? The Academy might simply prefer one of the other nominees.

Personally I wasn't all that impressed by Jurassic Park in the first place. Though it was a great deal better than both sequels

Lost a decent post because of this pathetic dial-up connection.

Anyways.... like I wrote in the previous post which is now lost forever.

Us Aussies are a paranoid bunch.

Just look at the nominations, surely Baz Luhrmen should of gotten one for Moulin Rouge. Or more importantly Nicole Kidman should of gotten a nomination for her role in The Others. She was sensational in that role and IMO way better than her role from Moulin Rouge.
