Wohoo, was attack by yet another virus/trojan horse today - Back Orifice(sp?)

Getting paranoid about leaving my computer online all day

My comp is so advanced, it just spits at these viruses... Oh yeah, my router helps a little too...

Well I'm getting paranoid - seems like not a week goes by where I don't get attacked by vira and trojan horses.

And to top it off, my stupid friends sends out mails with virus warnings - but these warnings are hoaxs

Ehhh - well, actually most attacks dosen't come from emails

- they are launched at your IP and different ports to gain access to your computer when online

Since the three main computers in my house are on a network, and it is my dad's computer that logs on(and shares the connection with mine and mom's), I would think the virus scan program his computer has would make it less likely for them to get to my computer since they would be first traveling to my dad's computer.

Well yes - if it is a trojan horse that the virus scanner can detect

.
But they can "move" quickly such vira - so depending on how often that computer scans for vira - the timeframe from it becomes infected until it scans, the virus can move freely through the network.
Remember an anti-virus program seldom scans continuesly - but at fixed times.

I haven't taken a look at it, but from what my dad has said, it not only is always active and scanning, but it also continually updates itself(as long as we're online).

I don't really care all that much about my computer getting infected, as long as I don't lose my 600+ pics of Tomoe Hotaru.

Well - when an antivirus, is always active, just means(most often mean) it scans on preset times, on computer start, and possible emails, it does not, as a firewall, checks when somebody/something access your computer ports to see what wants access.

A virus question (From Computers for Weasel)

Once you get a virus...do you have to reformat to get rid of it?

Or can Norton/Symantec wipe it out?

Okay. I don't know a whole lot about virus protection and such because I don't bother to worry about it. My laptop had a virus once, but it actually ran better when it had the virus than after the virus was removed(and the 'damage' repaired).

I think my dad's computer does have a firewall, but I keep forgetting to ask. I've been having some problems that are usually only caused by firewalls. *makes mental note to ask her dad tomorrow about it...wondering if her dad will even know what a firewall is*

Most vira can be fixed using utilities (ei. Symantec). Vira can however corrupt other files (destroy them) or "fat-tabel" or stuff like that, wich properly can't be repaiered.

What virus is it?

This is the tricky part.

I don't know if I do have a virus.

Here is the (problem) thing.

First my computer cannot find my printer. It says..turn on the power or make sure it is connected.

I did both..nothing.It's like the cable is not picking up the printer.

So I said..#### the printer.

Now my monitor is going completely crazy.

I have 'bleed' over.

I will try to explain this 'bleed' over.

Look at your screen at the main page of SYM , at the top. There is a banner ad. I turn on ICQ and guess what...I can read the banner ad threw ICQ. It's like it's transparent.

Well...... hmmm.
Haven't heard of a virus that diable your pritner or made ICQ transparent.
But better safe than sorry, so if you have the possibility run some sort of anti-virus.

I haven't run one yet. But I have both Norton and Symantec...(uninstalled) I guess I will install one and see.

On the transparent thing..I was just giving ICQ as an example...I have bleed over on everything.

Right now as I type..I can read the window behind this one.

Makes for interesting typing.

Hmmm - sounds quite wierd actually

- let me know after you've run antivirus

@Vicsun: I can only recomend a firewall, escpecially on a permanent connection and double especially on static IP.
But of course many attacks from trojan vira dosen't mean your computer will be affected, unless somebody specifically focus' on these trojan vira - they "just" open up all access to your computer and content

@Xandax: The onlt firewall I've tried so far is ZoneAlarm, but for some reason it screws my internet.. And I havn't got any problems since I uninstalled it

Have not heard many good things about ZoneAlarm myself - but haven't tried it myself, so I don't know how good it is.
Currently I use Symantec firewall, and it seems to be very effective

(except I can't play MP BG2 through it

so I have to disable it for that

)

Well, since we're pushing products

D-link has a gadget, DL112 or something that at least secures up your link. Gives you NAT too (that is, you can have more than one computer connected although you only have one IP-address).

A quick question regarding viruses - would you feel safer if your ISP were to filter your mail for viruses before delivery? If so, would you want the file (or whatever) delivered with a *huge* warning or just deleted with a notification?
