Preparation for Budapest

Post by fable »

I'd hoped to be able to spend more time here before Jan and I kidnap a Malev jet and fly to Budapest this Saturday, but that seems increasingly unlikely. We've got far too much preparation--so if I haven't replied to posts here, and seem to be absent, it's because I am. I don't really see that changing much until we get back, at the end of September.

All of you fellow SYMers will be missed. The conversation has been wonderful, but the lure of paprika, Kodaly, and people speaking a language I can't begin to understand beckon. Farewell for now! :)

If you need help kidnapping the plane, PM me, i can supply weapons and detonating devices and Mc'Donalds fries.

Hungary, eh?

"slaps forehad" Doh! That was my second guess. BTW, fable, are you visiting Buda or Pest? I understand Budpest is actually two cities, not one, like Minnesota and St. Paul here in the US.

And yeah, I still have Elegans to deal with. 'Can't forget fable's intellectual twin sister... :D

I think CE's smarter than I am, so you'll have your intellectual hands full. :D

About Budapest, though, it's actually three cities in one. You're right about Buda and Pest. (Buda's the section where all the tourists flock, but when we went six years ago for a couple of weeks, we prefered the towering baroque Pest facades that sat quietly dreaming on both sides of endless city blocks.) Then there's Old Buda, a smaller, newer residential city which incorporated with the other two within the last fifty years.

Buda and Pest are joined across the Danube by several longspan bridges, lit up up night by thousands of lights, courtesy of General Electric. ;) If it isn't gone, they also have a small 24-hour non-stop flower shop on the Pest side of several of the bridges. The Hungarians like little fanciful details of that sort.

See ya all later. :)

In any case I

This is my final post, here. We leave in roughly an hour. We've got about 2 1/2 hours drive to the airport, about 2 hours wait, and then 11 hours in the air. When we get off the plane, nobody will be speaking a language we can remotely comprehend. And given our probable psychological state after having all that driving, waiting and flying under our belts, even if they spoke a language we understood, it wouldn't really matter.

Next year we'll be doing a couple of weeks in the comparative quiet of North Carolina's Outer Banks, next to some nearly empty beaches. You're all invited, of course. :D
