It is only fitting that a city built atop an ancient dragon lair should be the rumored location of countless hidden treasures, both real and imagined. From buried treasure chests packed with pirate plunder, to vast secret treasuries maintained by tax-dodging merchants, Westgate features enough hidden riches to fill the dreams of avaricious treasure seekers throughout Faerun. However, no hoard excites the imagination quite like the one left behind by Westgate's last king, Verovan.
King Verovan's greed was legendary, as was his tyranny. It is said that he loved gold so much that he had naught but hate left over for everything else. In fact, Verovan is rumored to have traded part of his very soul to a demon lord in exchange for a pocket realm in the Abyss that he could use to house his immense fortune. This pocket plane served as a truly impenetrable vault, accessible only by King Verovan by means of a secret mechanism unknown to anyone but himself.
If anyone at all cried at Verovan's death in 1248 DR, it was only those who feared the king's riches - much of which were stolen from the citizens of Westgate - were lost forever. Of course, the unattainable nature of King Verovan's treasure has only made treasure hunters want it all the more. |
