The River Styx

Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

1 - Vettias

Vettias is a storyteller. He'll describe to you how Sisyphus attempted to stay out of the Underworld, and what happened when he failed.

2 - Archetimas

Archetimas will update the main quest "The Road to Hades." He'll tell you that Charon (#6) has left his ferry, and that as a result spirits can't cross the river.

3 - Antigenes / Hipparchus

Antigenes (#3) will tell you that with Charon (#6) missing, a shade named Hipparchus (#3a) attempted to take control of the ferry, but that he was captured by demons. This is the trigger for the side quest "One Who Would Lead."

"One thing is clear -- bravery is not rewarded here in the afterlife."

You'll find Hipparchus southeast of the dock, locked in a soul cage. When you approach the cage, a troglodyte hero named Orok Skullcrusher will attack you. Orok is a big slow melee boss, and when he dies, the soul cage will open and Hipparchus will go free.

However, when you talk to Hipparchus, he'll tell you that while he'd like to captain the ferry and use it to transport shades across the river, he can't do it without Charon's Oar. You'll find the oar on Charon on the unfinished bridge to the east (#6). When you deliver the oar to Hipparchus (now standing next to Antigenes on the dock), you'll receive a random relic and 40,000 experience points.

4 - Copreus

Copreus will trigger the side quest "The Stygian Lurker." He'll tell you about a beast that has been preying on the shades waiting to cross the river. You'll find this beast in the Stygian Marsh.

5 - Shrine of the Golden Bough

There doesn't appear to be any purpose to the shrine (at least on the normal difficulty setting).

6 - Charon

When you reach the middle of the bridge, walls of water will spring up on either side of you, and you'll be locked in and have to face Charon. Charon can be a tough boss to kill. He'll hit you with a variety of water (cold damage) spells, and he'll summon shades to attack you. Worse, after you've defeated him once, he'll return and become much more powerful, and his spells might kill you in one or two hits.

The best luck we had in this fight was to stay as far away from Charon as possible. His "geyser" attacks are the most powerful, but the geysers will only appear next to him, and so if you're far away, you can avoid them. In fact, if you stay far enough away he might not cast them at all, preferring his "rolling wave" attack (which should run out before it reaches you).

When Charon dies, he'll drop Charon's Essence and Charon's Oar. The essence should look familiar. It will drop a bunch of equipment when you click on it. You can use the oar in Hipparchus' quest (see #3).

7 - Tiresias

You'll run into another projection of Tiresias here. This time he'll be a little less cryptic. He'll tell you that something is wrong at Elysium, and he'll ask you to go there and solve the problem, whatever it might be.

Talking to Tiresias will complete the main quest "The Road to Hades" and trigger a new main quest "Judgment of the Living," and it will also net you 25,000 experience points.
