Side Quest: Till Death Do You Part (BAW)

Did we miss anything in this location? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Background

You'll trigger this quest by reading the note "Contract: Quarrelling at the Cemetery" on the notice board in Beauclair (#1).

Walkthrough

The note will advertise that Charles Lanzano is looking for somebody to end the "infernal racket" that is coming from the Temple Cemetery each night. You'll find Lanzano on the upper floor of the Clever Clogs Tavern (#2). When you talk to him there, he won't have much to add. He'll just mention that he's complained to the ducal guard with no result.

To investigate the cemetery (Exit A), you'll need to head over there and turn on your witcher senses. Then as you look around, you'll find a broken padlock, an empty wine bottle, and an opened grave -- that is, you'll find things that aren't overly helpful, so you'll decide to come back at night.

When you return to the cemetery at night, you'll hear the strange sounds that Charles described, and you'll detect that they're coming from the catacombs beneath the cemetery. To enter the catacombs, you'll need to climb down one of the staircases in the middle of the cemetery.

When you enter the catacombs, you'll hear the sounds coming from a crypt near the entrance (#3). However, when you go inside, you won't see anything amiss, and when you search the scene with your witcher senses, you'll only find the urns of Louis and Margot de Corentin, and no evidence of grave robbers or monsters at all. But then when you leave the crypt, you'll start hearing the sounds again.

To figure out what's going on, you'll need to hide in the crypt behind the statue on the far wall. After sitting there for a while, the spirits of Louis and Margot will appear, and they'll start arguing, and arguing, and arguing. Eventually you'll decide that there's only one solution -- that you'll need to remove one of their urns from the crypt. Both spirits will make a case for why they should get to stay, and they'll both promise to reveal where you can find some "lucky gwent cards."

So you'll have a choice to make:
  • If you side with Margot and pick up the Urn with Ashes of Louis de Corentin, then Louis will ask you to place his remains in the chamber of the Gwent Friendship Society of Beauclair, which you'll find deeper in the catacombs (#4). However, when you get there, you'll encounter some grave robbers looting the place. They'll attack you, but once they're out of the way, you'll be able to place Louis' urn in the chamber.

When you return to Margot, she'll tell you that the gwent cards are hidden under a rose bush in their garden. You'll find the de Corentin's house in the northern part of the city (#6). The easiest way to get into the garden is to climb over a broken wall in the northwestern corner and then climb down a ladder.

Inside the garden, you'll encounter a level 36 archespore. As always, the easiest way to defeat an archespore is to quaff a Superior Golden Oriole so its poison heals you. Afterwards, you'll find two gwent cards under the rose bush -- maybe. The two cards are Barclay Els (melee / ranged 6) and Vampire: Bruxa (melee 4 muster), but you'll only receive them if you didn't have them already. Also in the garden, you'll also find a Garden Key, giving you another way to get out.

  • If you side with Louis and pick up the Urn with Ashes of Margot de Corentin, then Margot will ask you to place her remains by her mother's grave in the Orlemurs Cemetery, which is located just outside the southern wall of the city (#5). If you turn on your witcher senses, then you'll only have to examine three of the grave markers. When you spot the one with "Micheline Belrose" on it, then you'll be able to place Margot's urn on it.

When you return to the crypt (#3), Louis won't be there. To make him show up, you'll need to pick up his urn. This will make him feel threatened, and he'll admit that he doesn't know where Margot hid his lucky cards. But he'll know something else. He'll tell you that a swordsmith named Trentin owes him a sword, and that you should be able to get it from him. When you visit Trentin (#7), he'll hand over a leveled version of the (magic) steel sword Forged in Fire, and he'll also offer to play you at gwent for up to 50 crowns per game (but no cards).

With the problem in the cemetery taken care of, when you return to Lanzano (#2), you'll have to decide what to tell him. If you tell the truth, then you'll receive your negotiated fee plus 100 xp. But if you lie, then you'll receive 100 crowns and 50 xp.

Note: If you tell Lanzano the truth at the end of the quest, then you'll earn the Honor virtue for the quest There Can Be Only One.
