Keldorn's proficiencies

Postby geh4th » Wed Jan 10, 2001 2:18 am

Could someone do me a favor and post what weapon proficiencies Keldorn starts with when you encounter him? Thanks.

He's specialized in two-handed swords and crossbows, but I forgot the rest.

Thank you. If anyone else knows any other weapons Keldorn uses, please let me know.

Regarding crossbows (and all missile weapons): I was under the impression that no bonuses were gained by specializing in these weapons, or at least to damage, anyway. The manual is VERY unclear about any distinction between melee and missile weapons. What, if any, benefits are gained by specializing in a 1) thrown weapon, and 2) fired weapon (bows & X-bows)?

In the original AD&D rules, missile weapon specialization is treated a bit different (gain damage bonuses only at short range, no extra attacks), but I think in the CRPG it works just like with melee weapons.

One major difference is that normally no strength bonuses are applied to missile damage. There is one exception though, the sling of seeking, which has this as special ability.

You get the to hit and damage bonuses from specialisation (for all ranged weapons) but not the extra attacks - IWD HoW will only allow 3 slots in ranged weaps (as per 2nd edition rules)- why got to 4 or 5 if you don't get the bonuses?

A good day to you, Grunt....with the hours I work, I have still learned that I can always expect to see you on the board when I am.

Thank you for the info. I guess with the bonuses, specialization in missiles still has some appeal after all....

Silly question: can an ARCHER use their special abilities with weapons other than bows? (i.e. slings and such???)

And a good day to you sir. Man, you're in early aren't you (or are you still there from the night?).

You can use those abilities with any ranged weapons as an archer.

Who was asking about the ranger/cleric? I tried it out and you can distribute profs in any cleric weapon (it doens't matter if you duplicate/lose profs from BG1 - you re-distribute them in BG2) up to normal ranger specialisation!!! i.e. like a fighter/cleric. Therefore, when dualled to a cleric you can get that 3rd dual-wield proficieny or put 2 in flails etc and, 5 into missile weaps (if an archer.

An Archer/Cleric anyone? That's my next bet - 2 strongholds aswell!!!!

I work midnight to 9am, Eastern time. Kinda boring, so I have plenty of time to read all of these posts. Keeps me awake (well, most of them do, anyway....)

I was part of that Ranger/Cleric discussion. Your info is as I was suspecting. So you can be a "Slinger/Cleric", with 2 strongholds, awesome reangestrike ability (especially with the sling of seeking), access to all cleric AND druid spells...not bad, not bad. Have to try that out on my next run thru the game.

Internet tech support. Not too many people calling in for help on my shift. Mostly I just clean up the loose ends left over from the dayshift people.

Can an Archer really get 5 specialzations in a missile weapon? I thought that only fighters could do that....

Anybody else know anything about Keldorn's weapon choices?

Yes to the archers 5. Just try it with a new character - you get 6 to play with and 5 can go in any missile weap.

PS This shouldn't be allowed according to the rules - as a *new* character (lvl1) you can only put 2 max in a weap. You'd have to distribute your initial 4 as a fighter into at least two weapons.

Can't recall about Keldorn, but since I only have him using 2-handed sword and crossbow I think he might be proficient in longswords - redundant really if you give him carsomyr.

Well, I am playing an Undead Hunter, and Carsomyr is MY sword, thank you very much. I probably will not even use Keldorn, since 2 paladins would seem redundant, but if he knows anything about the warhammer I was thinking Crom Faeyr (sp?) might be an attractive option for him...I guess by the time you get Crom, you could have learned warhammer from scratch, eh?

He definitely doen't know warhammer. I'm sure its longswords now.

Keep *ahem* your sword, give keldorn the good longswords and there are plenty of good X-bows to buy at the mart.

It'll be easy to give hem 2 profs in warhammer by the time you get Crom Faeyr. Plus he only has Str 17 or somehting so thats a big plus.

I seem to have unwittingly chosen the exact same proficiencies as Mr. Keldorn. I have 2-handed sword, longsword, and crossbow. What a coincidence...

Who else do you consider a good candidate to bear the almighty hammer? Not counting evil people...

(A humorous thought: can you imagine a halfling {Mazzy} with a 25 strength? Gotta make you smile!)

Heh heh - Mazzy's got kick-ass HP for a halfling as well!

What about minsc? OK his strength is good to begin with, but 18/93 to 25 is still a big leap. Plus you can get him to specialise quickly (although with str 25 you only really need to give someone, anyone, proficiency). Who's in your party?

I'm having this bother - who do I give CF to, or do I want to trade my gauntlets etc. for it anyway?

My protagonist(thief dualled to fighter) has longbow++, longsword+++, dualwield+++, sword only+ warhammer+.

I am early in the game, and at this time I have an Undead Hunter, Minsc, Jaheira, Nalia, Anomen and a floater. Right now I am putting up with Korgans' grousy-ass, long enough to do the Book of Kaza quest. The way I figure it, I would do this in good conscience because it involved the "liberating" of numerous undead beasties.

Later I will use the floater spot to cycle NPC's in to do their quests. Ultimately, that spot goes to Imoen. The next-most-expendable person is Mr. knight-wannabe (Anomen). I just like the idea of having a really high level cleric in the group (not just a druid.)

Anomen would be a good candidate for CF. He's annoying but is also a great cleric.

Yes, Anomen occurred to me as the prime candidate within this group. Everyone else has other kick-butt weapons to look forward to. He has CF, the mace of disruption, and Flail of the Ages, and not much else.

How many types of monsters are there that can only be hit (or seriously damaged) by a BLUNT weapon? My main doesn't know anything blunt at this point, and I wonder if I need to in the future.

Just clay golems to my knowledge. All others require only +X weapons (I certaninly had +3 sword damaging Iron Golem).

I think the only other creatures who require a certain type of damage are slimes - slashing and piercing.
