Soloing Sorcerer

Postby Zain » Sat Aug 12, 2006 11:09 am

i want to solo BG2/SoA/ToB with just a sorcerer. big deal some think- actually its gonna be my first try at soloing. so i just need to confirm some things before i start ( since IMHO it is pretty important )

wis and int. i dont know which one is the better for the mage ( it's told in the create char screen anyway, and its been awhile ) but- what are the effects in spells/memorizing/dmg for the 2? a friend of mine once said that both have something to do in those areas.. normally i would look it up in my manual ( which i cant find for some evil reason )

well... uhm thnx in advance ^^

You need at least 9 int in order to cast spells from scrolls.
Wisdom is only useful if you plan to use the wish spell. 16 wis allows all options. Else you can set wisdom as low as 3 without penalty.

Soloing Sorcerer.

Probably want both to be 18 or close to it. Once you get the 'wish' spell conversing with the Djinn checks both as I recall.

If you do a 'search' on all posts done by Userunfriendly, XYX, Alson and Littiz to name a few you'll find a lot of helpful and useful information on how best to maximise your stats, spell choices, and use of cheese.

Finally revisiting BG2 myself and finishing my f/mu/t run through using the tutu mod with ascension installed. I've yet to ever beat it.

G'luck with your solo run. :)

Int isn't used for the wish spell, so more than 10 for avoiding the lore penalty is wasted. (high lore only saves you the time to cast a few identify spells at the beginning)

ok, thnx guys ^^

this is how i want to plan it out with the stats-

strength: 5 ( required to use staves, all staves require this )
dex: rest
con: 16/18 > more HP per level, which is usefull IMHO ( one character who takes all the blows )
int: 18
wis: sec. rest ( i dont see the reason i should max this out- since well.. a mage doesnt really require it if i understand it correctly )
cha: 3/5, depends on the minimum. since i dont need rings like 'ring of acuity'- i can use the ring of humn influence

tell me what you guys think :)

Why wouldn't you want the Ring of Acuity? You'll want one of those, and one Ring or Sorcerous... or whatever it's called.

To make a long story short, 10/10/16/18/18/16 is a 88 roll, not hard at all to come by. If you don't want to spend a few minutes rolling, 8/8/16/18/16/15 is a 81 roll. Or something in between, depending on what you're rolling.

Strenght shouldn't be too low, since it defines how much you can carry. Agility shouldn't be too low either, since it gives you AC penalties. 16 STA gives you the best non-warrior +hp/level, and high Int, Wis and Cha is pretty self-explainatory.

3 strength is in fact playable, at the beginning you can use the strength spell and later you can wear a girdle of giant strength.
18 dex gives +4 AC bonus which can be nice.
16 con is enough to grant the maximum hitpoints, more isn't neccessary.
More than 10 int is useless, the points are better spent elsewhere.
3 cha isn't a problem, you can put on the ring of human influence when shopping or collecting rewards and put it off afterwards.

I'd go for minimum stats of
8-18-16-10-3-3, it should be nearly impossible to get a total roll lower than 58.
With a roll of 81 I'd go for
18-18-16-10-16-3
and with a roll of 88 you can try
10-18-16-10-16-18
With a total roll of 96 your character is perfect:
18-18-16-10-16-18

High wisdom I think reduces cast delay or reduces chances of being interrupted, or atleast I remember it that way.

At very least though, having 18 Wisdom and 18 intelligence is vital to using the Wish spell.

Ok, I can see your givin this guy loadrs of crap. First of all make as many throws as possible, you have to max charisma, this is for sure, then max dexterity, and const. The rest aint so important. Strenght only 5 ? I think he's going to be seriously mad because he wont be able to have a lot of items in his pockets. And how about the spells? Defensive: STONE SKIN is a must, then mirror visage or sth like that and spell reflection ( dunno the names in eng, got .pl version ) And then choose destuctive spells and GO FOR IT dude, beat the game.
Personally I did the game solo Blade, it was... easy [= hF!

It is easy to say others "giving crap" when you apparently doesn't show you know what you talk about.

For a sorcerer, there is absolutly no need in maxing neither charisma nor constitution. Charisma because the ring of human influence can give you all the charisma needs and because a sorcerer uses intelligence to cast spell (in the implementation of BG2 - remember, this isn't 3rd edition rules) and constitution gives no HP benefits over 16 for a sorcerer. So a 16 con. sorcerer would have as many HP as a 18 con all other things equal.

How come ? o.0 Isn't it written in the class info that sorc needs charisma to cast spells?

ANd this is a good idea in a ring of human influence.

Baldur's Gate 2 is a 2nd edition game and the sorcerer is actually a 3rd edition class. Thus the implementation of the sorcerer has been tweaked somewhat, thus for instance not relying on charisma as prime statistic.

Interesting, trully interesting, gotta check it out, because I've been always thinking that even in 2nd ed charisma is main stat for sorc. Thx for showing me the right side of road.

You - as I mentioned - do not need higher then 16 constitution as you'll get no HP benefits from that. Check the tables in the back of the manual.

Dexterity is for AC.

Dexterity is pretty important, a mage and his armour class are really hard to raise.

I thought that the sorcerer was bugged in BG2 and he relies on no stats at all for casting spells?

Wisdom is good for other things besides the wish spell, it effects your saving throws to I believe.
Remember, being Evil in Baldur's Gate 2 is VERY fun...

I have never actually played a sorcerer in BG2, but I do recall seeing the same mentions on the board, that intelligence didn't really effect the spellgain/casting of the sorcerer (save scrolls), and I do not see anything in the charts in the manual to indicate it either (the spell gain and casting per day seems uneffected by intelligence).
So it might be worth to try out before committing to assigning attributes for the real character.
