A compelling and convincing world coupled with a deep character design, an involved story with a few surprises, and some well drawn characters are let down by an over reliance on staple RPG dungeon crawling and a combat system that only occasionally reaches the dazzling heights of mediocrity. If you like big involved RPGs this game is well worth a look, even if only because Arcanum tries to create something a little different to all the Tolkien copies out there.
