It’s hard to blame Chaosbane for just being an unoriginal action RPG, but ultimately I found myself asking over and over, 'Why don’t I just play Diablo instead?' And that is a question the game fundamentally fails to answer.
IGN 8.7/10:
Warhammer: Chaosbane can stand proudly alongside some of the best games that have used the foreboding, Gothic Old World as a setting. Action RPGs like this live and die based on fun combat and well-designed classes, and developer Eko Software really hit it out of the park on both of those counts. I look forward to hacking, blasting, and sniping my way through the daemonic masses with three of my favorite warriors whenever I get the urge. And maybe I’ll give Vollen another shot at some point, too. You know, he seems like a good kid.

The mission design and story can grate at times, but this is a devilishly fun homage to Diablo 3 and Warhammer Fantasy you’ll want to get your friends in on.

Warhammer: Chaosbane borrows the elements that made past action RPGs of the same genre so addicting , perhaps sticking a bit too closely, resulting in a game that may feel a little too familiar for veterans of the genre.

So, if you feel like switching your brain off for a bit and doing some serviceable mulching then….maybe? I feel like Eko Software had a chance to bring back some of that dread and foreboding to the Diablo formula that Diablo 3 did away with. Warhammer is baroque and silly but it’s also rich with detail and tragic heroes, and Chaosbane plays the whole thing a bit straight, storywise. The environments, lavishly detailed as they are, lack any real sense of place. The forces of chaos themselves lack personality, or even much differentiation. It’s still very well made for what it is, though. Sometimes, frictionless is just what you need.

Ever since Diablo Immortal was announced – much to the disappointment of long-time fans – gamers have been looking for similar experiences which nail the combat and addictive loot-based gameplay. Even with its problems, Warhammer: Chaosbane is a supremely satisfying adventure and an excellent addition to the genre, and represents a strong basis for further updates and improvements.
PC Invasion 6/10:
Repetitive, meandering, and streamlined to a fault, Warhammer: Chaosbane lacks the depth to keep you invested well past the shallow endgame. It's a shame given the rich lore and enemy design.
