Over the years Planescape: Torment has gained the status of a cult classic. An RPG with clunky combat and a rough opening it's nevertheless hard to beat for the rich weirdness of its setting, the philosophical writing of its story, and the memorability of its characters. Tides of Numenera took on the difficult task of following it despite sharing none of those characters or its setting. Instead, it took place in the Ninth World, a distant future in which technology is sufficiently advanced to be indistinguishable from D&D items and where an immortal body-hopper leaves behind castoffs who struggle to find their own identity. It was still as weird as Planescape, but in its own way, and it managed the twin feats of both resembling the original thematically and making the millions of words of text it immersed you in worth reading.
