Swords of Never
Fireball Festage

A lot of people on the forums mentioned that these guys are very hard to kill. Here are some tips for defeating them. I am using a solo (no henchman) Sorcerer on Very Difficult. My Sorc defeated them at level 7.

1) Take the Hellhound familiar. Since "Knock" and "Find Traps" can take care of your thieving needs, you don't need the Pixie. The Hellhound has the most HPs and (with their additional fire damage added to their melee attack) deals the most damage in combat. Most importantly, the Hellhound is immune to fire.

2) Have Haste casted on yourself before entering the tomb.

3) Once you enter, the Hellhound should charge down the middle and be surrounded by all the swords. Start chucking fireballs at the Hellhound.

Haste makes it so that your fireballs have no recovery time in between (allowing you to cast them twice as fast). The dog cannot stand up to the swords for long but all the swords will die after 4 fireballs if you don't miss. If not, there should only be one left at Near Dead.

Neverwinter Darkness

Cast Darkness near the door. The Swords might still attack you inside the Darkness area, but you can just go around them and they will not follow you out of the Darkness area. The key is to cross the platform, retrieve the items, and get back out before the Darkness spell expires.

One of my friends avoided the fight by using an invisibility potion, and he said that worked fine.

One By One

I usually tell my Henchman to guard me before I go in there, then, once inside, I run behind the stairs. 9 out of 10 times, at most 1 of the swords will follow... and 1 is pretty easy to take down. If I have enough health left, I show my face to one of the remaining swords and lure it behind the stairs, where I can take it down without being interrupted by the others. That way, you can take them down 1 by 1. You can even rest there!

Expensive Fail-Proof

After hearing they were a challenge, and then witnessing them first hand, I found the easiest way to defeat the Swords of Never, for a spell caster (though I am sure part of this strategy is equally effective for a melee-type) is to wear a Greater Swordsman's Belt (between it (slashing), its matching partners of archers (piercing) and brawling (bludgeon), and the various haste items, the game really becomes unbalanced (I would encourage independent game designers to disallow all of them in ongoing campaigns), but because they are available, I offer this strategy). I then combined it with the casting of any of Endure Elements/Resist Elements/Protection from Elements on self (I guess a Ring of Elemental Protection would also work, but I don't think one was available when I fought them). Between the Belt and the Spell, the Swords should not be able to do any damage (though Endure Elements may allow in a point or two), leaving you free to bash the swords to smithereens with weapons or spells. If (more likely, when, because eventually they will hack through the protection) the protective spell wears off, exit, rest, recast, come back and finish them off.

By the time I was finished (I only had to go in once), my summoned monster was dead (I was partly responsible with my area of effect spells, though I left my henchman at the temple to avoid having to ress him) and my spell had worn off while I was fighting the last sword, but one sword alone isn't much of a challenge. The main drawback is the 11K-ish cost of the Belt (available at the Shining Knight), but considering I never found the Belts in another shop in Acts II-IV, you might as well buy them in Act I because they are useful throughout the modules.

Solo & Stealthy

I currently play a rogue in NWN, and I have found you can get past the Swords of Never by:

1.) being a solo rogue (no henchmen)
2.) stealth before entering the door

I have attempted this 3 times, and in all 3 attempts I have successfully been able to walk right past the Swords, pick the lock on the chest, take the loot and walk right back out the door without the swords ever attacking me.
