Missile Launcher
Hire a thief or mage rather than a warrior. Then, have him only fight with missile weapons and stand far away from you as he follows you. As you engage the enemy, he will cast or fire upon your harassers. They will leave him alone, usually, but if one does disengage you, to attack your fire support hireling, you'll get an attack of opportunity (automatic) and then you can switch your attacks to him until he either un-targets your hireling or is dead.
