Peter Molyneux Talks Fable IV Development

We recently heard from Fable co-creator Simon Carter about the rumored Fable IV title allegedly being developed by Playground Games, so it was only a matter of time before someone chatted up Peter Molyneux himself about the hypothetical RPG sequel and what direction he'd like to see it go in the event that it exists. And it's this article on IGN that offers up that very feedback from the long-time designer:
"The Fable story hinted at a dramatic time before Fable 1 when the Guild was founded, this would be a perfect setting for Fable 4," Molyneux said, noting "the land of Albion would be much more primitive, the magic much more attuned to nature, the combat much more brutal."

With the first two Fable games hinting at the dramatic creation of the Guild, Molyneux said he could see this new title serving as a great opportunity to put players in the role of founding the Guild.

With regard to the combat, Molyneux said he'd "love to see brutal, visceral and fluid combat system that left permanent scars. Weapons like short swords, long swords, daggers, spears, long bows and crossbows all having a there own combat feel and specialties."

He also thinks the magic system should be overhauled, giving players the "ability to 'craft' your own unique system." Molyneux would also like to see players be able choose their familiar—be it a dog, cat, bird, or yes, even a goldfish—that "assists you with magic and bonds with you." Additionally, he thinks players should have their own horse they can train, as well as their own home they can "build from scratch up to an abode fit for a hero."

Molyneux said he'd also like to see a creature bestiary "with hordes of small creatures," as well as rideable dragons and "god-sized giants." Providing the player the ability to "morph their own alignment, based on their actions—so you would become a Thief if you sneak and steal or a knight if you adhere to a code of honor" is something he believes should be incorporated as well.
Weapon variety, a customizable magic system, and a horse companion would be great additions, but I'm hopeful that they won't introduce more comedic enemies and other general silliness. Fable fans have grown up, and a more mature theme is in order.
