Problems with Unofficial Patches

I have tried this twice: I install the game and download the official 1.2 patch. After downloading the unofficial patch 1.6 (and same problem when I downloaded unofficial patch 1.5 just to see if the problem was simply with 1.6), I lose ALL sound. Not just the game, but on Real Player, Windows Medial Player etc. When I do the dxdiag, the sound test fails. I fixed this (both times) by uninstalling the game and reinstalling it, together with reinstalling the Direct X 9.0c that is on the disc, and then the sound is back. I can then install patch 1.2, and everything is fine. Interestingly, reinstalling the direct x driver after installing 1.5 or 1.6 DOESN'T work.

I have a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card with an updated driver.

Any help and/or suggestions would be appreciated.
