They don't. You have to reload your game in order to the monsters spawn again.

Simply using a portal doesn't mean you've slain every single enemy in the area. And believe me, considering how huge the game is, in the area you were at there was probably a small spot that you overlooked and the creatures there just randomly wandered closer to your portal.

Wait, you were in the catacombs fighting enemies there, and then you went into the spartan warcamp wandered out of it without using the portal, and you found enemies there?

That's not a respawn. When you save an exit, the entire WORLD respawns, not just the area your in. Just because you go to a new area doesn't mean everything respawns in the game without the save/exit.

I used a portal to travel to spartan warcamp from catacombs without save/reload the game!

i also found another thing, it must travel "far enough!"
the near map won't respawn.

You had problems with equiping items? I had problems with finding items. My level was always a lot bigger than the level of the items & their ability requirement. I had to import items from my character with level 40 to my character with level 25 so that he could have a decent items. I never reloaded the game just so that i could kill more. Instead i often rushed the game without exploring the area.
