I ve read that if I set my background in character creation to Teacher I can teach my companions all the skills that I know (but -1 lvl, so if Im an expert of melee combat and my companion has enough skill to learn apprentice lvl, I can teach it to him, but not higher).

Is there any other way I can promote skills of my companions? I couldnt find it anywhere...

The background is actually educator, and sadly the answer is no.

    That would be telling!
However, some NPCs are pre-programmed to advance certain skills on their own; for example, Dog will eventually become a master at melee.

But as galraen has said, other than perhaps by hacking the game, you have no further control over the process.

Not even sure low level hacking can do anything about it. The best person I've come across in this regard is Drog, and I haven't seen him on here for some time. In the meantime this is an excellent source of information, help and mods.

If you learn how to make custom background yourself, you may in fact be able to edit the "Educator" background to allow you to use that specific effect AS WELL as your stat increases or decreases you would prefer, now that I've come across this, I feel more inclined to answer this question effectively, so as soon as I can I'll run a few tests... but as much as I know, when you create or edit things, you need to create a WHOLE new character each time you touch up, so all previous saves will still have the Educator background as it normally is, and you can even change it back afterward by undoing your changes once you've made your character(so long as you still have the tool used to look into the files open(*coughs*notepad*coughs*)
