| | | Problems from the start I have a brand new laptop and a recent desktop computer. Both run the Godfather fine (bought today). Oblivion will not run on my desktop at all, when I click the start icon I get an error box for windows asking if I want to report the error.
On the laptop it runs, I got through the initial area fine but immediately upon exiting the sewers the game either (a) went black screen) or (b) went into a major lag mode.
I've gone into the options and decreased all the options to bare basics but that hasn't helped.
Any suggestions? |

| | | On your desktop, check the windows event viewer to see if there any informative error messages.
As for the laptop, I'd start with making sure that you're using the latest video card drivers and if you have a nvidia based video card than keep checking nvidia's website. I heard (although it might be just a rumour err... BS) that nvidia plans on releasing a driver set specially optimized for Oblivion.

I had a problem getting Oblivion to run on my desktop - and received similar error to what you are describing. Out of curiosity, did the installation wizard hang at the very end of installation, after you read the read-me?
Anyway, I couldn't even uninstall without an error on the desktop - but I reverted the system back to before the install and re-installed, but this time I didn't read the read-me. It all works fine now. Go figure.... |

| | | Does the game lag in the Sewers excessively?????
It may just be going from a closed, smaller interior cell to a wide open cell with HUGE viewing distance.
Any Specs on the laptop??? |

I did an uninstall and reinstalled, and got the same error again. The game starts loading, I get the small black window in the upper left hand corner that opens and then it goes white and I get another window that says Oblivion. It says that Oblivion has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I've turned off the bells and whistles for XP. I installed the game set up to accomodate Win 2000 (I do have XP); this was something posted in another thread just to get it to install.
I've closed all the process, the firewall and everthing else that I can find here. Still searching for answers. Thanks. |

| How did you revert the system back to the install and reinstall?

| | | If you have windows XP, do a system recovery, should do the trick, though might take a few hours. I think that's what you're talking about. |

| | | Me too I also have the problem of Oblivion not starting, like described above, a small black window appears in the top left corner, then shortly after tells me 'Oblivion has encountered a problem and has to close.' I have uninstalled it, then re-installed it 3 times with no luck at all. So I'm just wondering if anyone has any answers...
thanks |

| | | I am pretty sure he means system restore - press F1, or Start->Help and type in that, it'll point you to the Sys Restore Wizard and how to run it. You should do it in Safe Mode. Choose a restore point prior to the date you installed Oblivion, though keep in mind anything else installed after that will go as well.

| | | System recovery and system restore are the same thing, but lest you're really sure it's the only way, then NEVER do a system format.
But yeah, listen to ashen on how to get to system restore. I know how to on my PC, but that's MY PC and it could be different from your's in that aspect. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
