Obvious questions from newbee

Hi i have just joined and have looked around a bit couldnt find threads to answer my questions so although i know they must have been asked tons of times before here goes.
Is there a top level to aspire to
Is there a recomended level to be at before atempting the big gate
What do you all recon to be the best weapon/weapon combo for max damage

1)
Your level goes up by one whenever you level 10 majors total. So 1 sneak 2 blade etc up to 10 grants another level.

it depends on how LOW your majors are when you start. If you are a combat character then combat majors start out higher (so max level is lower). If you have a racial bonus then the major starts out higher so max level is lower.

One thing to keep in mind for this question and others is that monsters increase in power in response to your level. So if you are 47th level you will fight some powerful monsters!!!

If you want to be the highest level pick say combat but choose all majors that are NOT combat and a race that has none of your majors as bonuses.

2) by big gate I don't know if you mean the first oblivion gate or something later in the plot I haven't gotten to. I try to get sigil stones that are useful and also roleplay (so I don't go in a gate at level 2).

3) I don't know if you mean a certain weapon or a type of weapon. I like to use a shield because then the wear and tear from blocking and attacking doesn't damage only my weapon. I like light weapons so I can carry more for different situations. Definately a longsword for high damage to kill routine things and a dagger for backup and fully charged up. I don't like blunt trauma as much as razor sharp blades

Right well im level 34 at the min what i meant was like skills only go to 100 +enchantments so will i max out at level 100 also(long way i know just wondering)
Im on about the big gate at choral after you get the artifacts for micheal i think its near the end of the game so im trying to do lots of side quests to level up wouldnt want to go in and get flattened
I heard umbra was good for about 45 points of damage but i have 33 on it in my inventory, thats why i was asking about weapons/weaponcombos

As you level up so do your enemies so you could complete the entire main plot at level 1. (presumably this is easier than at level 34)
The best weapon combo depends on your character. If you specialized in bladed weapons I'd go with the best enchanted sword. If you specialized in blunt then go that route.
Level 34 is more than adequate to complete the game as long as you've tailored to your character's strengths.

a good weapon combo is using Paralyze spell, than slashing at an enemy with a daggar which is fast but may not do much damage if you are low in short blade skill, but if you enchant the daggar with a destruction spell or somthing that deals damage it could prove as an extraordinary combat technique when your being swift and sneaky. Another good one is Great axe and high destruction, Hit with your axe than, since it is slow, cast some devastating fire/lightning etc. whatever you fancy and hit again for maximum damage.

my fav weapon/combo would be Azura's star with a blade/bow/staff that i have enchanted with 1 sec soul trap (small spell has numerous casts) i use a bow that i enchanted with the first Sigil Stone from the first gate......... just need to get some black soul gems before i carry on with the dark brotherhood quests

Umbra isn't that great. Whoop de doo it grows along with you strength stat. It starts at low 20s and the higher your strength it can go to mid 40s. Make an enchanted swrod with extra damge and a 1 sec soul trap. Bam you got umbra!(in a nutshell) as for the best, nothing. Someone will always create something better(why I love this game) jus know what your fighting style is and form a weapon around what you like the best. Whether it be bow to war hammer. I'm a mage and I prefer an enchanted longsword cause its reliable when magika is low. Nothing special about them but nothing really bad either.
