Thumbs up forgetting spells...

Forgive me if this is covered in the manual, and I have just missed it, but...

Is there a way of erasing old spells from your spell book?

My list is getting tediously large, and I'd love to get rid of some of the pathetic spells I am never going to use again. (indeed, some are completely obsolete, and have no reason to exist @all )

Just drop them if that the answer you're looking for. I can't help you on the PC version since I don't have it but if you have it on the 360 just press X.

I am refering to spells learnt, not scrolls picked up.

I don't see a way of 'forgetting' spells you have learnt/been taught.

Hmm, no I don't think so. But I use the quickslots for them so it doesn't really bother me ...

Send a message via MSN to Greg.
In Morrowind you pressed shift (or control, I can't remember) and left mouse button...

You can use the "player.removespell [ID]" command from the console to remove any spell from your list. Of course, this only works on the PC version.

I'm still working on our spell database (which will include all the IDs), but in the meantime you can open up the character data that the game dumps into your Oblivion installation folder for a full list of all the spells your character knows and their 8-character ID. It's just a text file and can be opened with Wordpad or similar program.

Hope that helps.

Of course, you can just be careful about which spells you learn...

I'm very picky about what spells my char learns, and mostly choose spells that will always be useful, even as Novice-level spells: Healing spells, Water-Breathing/Walking, Light/Starlight, Shield etc. Utility spells, I suppose.

Destruction spells are a bit different, since you need more powerful spells as you go along; so I stick with the Flare you are given, plus the Minor Fireball you get given a bit later, and a Snowball (not sure if that's the name, but cold-based anyway), until I get Apprentice level spells of the same sort, when I also acquire an Electrical spell. Better spells can be purchased at higher levels, of course, but don't stuff your spell inventory with a lot of spells you will rarely use.

It's a good idea to limit the number of Touch spells to the most useful (there are not many!) and stick with Self and Ranged spells.
