If you aren't fussed about race, try creating a Red Gaurd character, they are 75% resistant to poison. I think it is the poisoned short sword that causes a lot of the damage.

Or get yourself a bunch of potions (resist poison, fortify strength, fortify endurance etc.) and as soon as you are attacked pause the game by bringing up your stats and inventory, and pour the potions down the hatch.

You could also try sliding the game difficulty way down in "options"

The assassins don't spawn every time you sleep. Its a somewhat random event. I've found a couple of places where they don't ever seem to spawn however such as in the Ghorak manor in Caldera (by Creeper). However, guild bunkrooms and hostels/inns are not safe from them. Hand to hand fighting actually works pretty good against them but you need to be able to hit with a high level of success. Fortunately this is one of the easiest skills to build quickly. You can become quite proficient in it before you even leave Seyda Neen. Also if you are playing an Imperial you can use your inate Drain Fatigue spell to zap them before starting HTH combat which will cause them to get knocked out more quickly. If you can get the first shot in and keep nailing them with your fists they never have a chance to use their jink blade weapons on you (i.,e. paralyze and poison cast on strike). Eventually they will be drained of fatigue and become unconscious. Now they will start taking damage from your hits. Later on in the game levitating and water walking are good ways to evade their attacks. You can sleep on top of tiny rock spires or high up on daedric ruins. If assassins spawn you can pick them off with arrows. For the time being its best to just reload if they spawn.

word I've just started as an imperial monk and I've taken three down so far with consumate ease. and their armour sells for a decent amount for the early stages of the game, so I'm just loving them.

Why did you get attacked so early, and why were they so persistant? I got attacked at like lvl 11 or something, after I slaughtered him and took his stuff they left me alone.
whats the trigger for causing the attacks to start?

I believe the attacks are completely randomized. I've been attacked as early as level 1 trying to sleep in the outskirts of Seyda Neen. Other times I've been attacked at about level 4 or 5. They will continue to attack you throughout the game until you trigger the event that stops them (i.e. by visiting Ebonheart and speaking to the visiting Imperial Guard inspector). I really like those early attacks. It puts an edge onto the gameplay.

The GOTY editions for PC and X-box include the expansions "Bloodmoon" and "Tribunal". You need to have these installed to get the extras.

They're a gold mine, all right - so I always delay going to Mournhold.

Unless you can buy the expansions individually for the XBox version (no idea here, I just use a PC), I would imagine so. I suggest checking the official Elder Scrolls site, they may have some information on the subject.
